About the Author
Melanie Moreland lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-six-plus years. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them. Known as the quiet one with the big laugh, Melanie works at a local university and for its football team. Her job, while demanding, is rewarding as she cheers on her team to victory. While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys travelling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip. Melanie delights in a good romance story with some bumps along the way, but is a true believer in happily ever after. When her head isn’t buried in a book, it is bent over a keyboard, furiously typing away as her characters dictate their creative storylines to her, often with a large glass of wine keeping her company.

**4 Your Fence or Mine, Stars**
By Vanessa Morse
Review—Over the Fence by Melanie Moreland
“I kept thinking about Kourtney and how skittish she became every time I suggested some sort of face-to-face meeting, however casual. What could she possibly have to hide that would make her not want to meet me? We were already friends; at least I thought we were.”
Nathan Fraser is used to being alone. His routine consisted of eat, drink, sleep, work, repeat; no substance, no meaning. Until one day he smelled something divine coming from the other side of the fence.
Kourtney Whyte made it a point to stay isolated. With massive insecurities, she shut herself out from the world. Until one evening a voice drifted over the fence, completely changing her life…one meal at a time.
“You like her.” “What’s not to like? She’s funny, cooks like a dream, and I enjoy her company.” “Through the barrier of a fence.”
As time goes on, Nathan and Kourtney forge a relationship surrounded by good food, laughter, and the security of a fence between them…only Nathan wants more.
One day, he gets his chance…Kourtney needs him more than she would’ve ever admitted and once their eyes meet, it’s all a matter of time. Time spent face to face, and learning the real reasons behind each of their isolated lives.
“But would she allow it to change? Girlfriend rather than fence friend? Or was I simply the funny guy next door; the proverbial stray cat, the one she feels sorry for and feeds? Would she let me be more?”
This story. I fell in love from the very beginning…20% in and I was hooked. I loved the author’s use of words, how she made me feel her story, not just read it. That. That takes talent, so color me impressed. What else I loved about this story: the banter. The conversation; be it text, IM, or conversation through the fence…and when they came face to face, *swoon*. Nathan is exactly the perfect gentleman, despite his past and his alpha tendencies. Kourtney, the shy and meek bookworm. When brought out of her shell, she was witty, and funny, and the socks—I LOVE the socks!
With this story, the one thing I had a hard time with…while I understand the meaning behind the storyline, I had difficulty with the constant need to reassure the characters. I felt that it chewed up a lot of the pages, when I really wanted to move forward onto what was really happening or going to happen.
This was a book that had no real conflict, it was just a love story about a boy and a girl…falling in love over food, through a fence. It was a real-life kind of story that was sweet and enjoyable, but not one that ripped my heart out or made it sit in my throat. While I felt everything they did, I would still classify this as a “PG Love Story” because it is just that. It has all the emotion, all the love, but tastefully done to where you know it’s happening but it doesn’t have to be explicitly spelled out. It fit the characters and storyline perfectly, and I liked the change of pace.

Bittersweet, beautiful, and laugh-out-loud funny.

I was fortunate enough to get to read Over the Fence for Melanie a couple of months ago, and I still want to kiss her for giving me that honor.

When Kourtney Whyte moves in next to Nathan Fraser, he expects the same old, same old. What he gets is a neighbor with a penchant for cooking, and one of the sweetest laughs he's ever heard. And luckily for him, Kourtney's willing to take pity on a cooking-challenged bachelor and feed him.

What starts as a simple kindness between two neighbors quickly turns into the highlight of Nathan's day. He lives for conversations shared through the slats of the fence. The only problem? He's dying to meet his neighbor face to face, but she seems content with things just the way they are. Until a part of her past comes back to haunt her.

When Kourtney is cornered by the jerk (who needs to be eaten by lions), Nathan leaps to her defense, stepping over the fence for the first time. What he finds in Kourtney is more than he ever dreamed. She's beautiful, talented, sweet, and so kind. But Kourtney has had a lifetime of sorrow, and her insecurities are not easily overcome.

Nathan makes it his mission in life to teach her just how beautiful she is. And then she learns the truth about Nathan's dark past, forcing her and Nathan both to confront their demons and decide whether they're able to move forward together.

From page one, I loved Nathan and his Chefgirl. Nathan is such a sweetheart - and a total bachelor. He eats questionable leftover food, forgets to grocery shop, and has a pitiful excuse for a yard. But he's hardworking, loyal, and his attraction to his mysterious neighbor brings out the funny guy in him. He's so easy to like!

And so is Kourtney. She's fragile, having been taken advantage of and tormented by those who should have protected her. Until Nathan, she never really had anyone to tell her how important she is and how much she has to offer the world. She struggles to believe him, but with his help, she begins to break free of the prison of her past.

There was nothing I didn't like about this novel... except maybe for the fact that the jerk didn't get eaten by lions. I was really cheering for lions to devour him. But Kourtney didn't really need lions to put him in his place anyway. She has Nathan for that, and I love how much he loves her.

Over the Fence is bittersweet, beautiful, and laugh-out-loud funny all at once.

5/5 Stars.

Entertaining, thoughtful, and sweet love story

Favorite Quotes:

“Sylvia only visited when she wanted something. That something was usually me.”

“Or was I simply the funny guy next door; the proverbial stray cat, the one she feels sorry for and feeds?”

“Think of me like a cell phone – you didn’t know you wanted one, but once you got used to having it around, you wondered how you ever did without one.”

“And we’re only gonna get better Chefgirl. You know, practice makes perfect. And I’m all for perfect.”

“I’ve never been loved before… by anyone. I’m not giving you up because things might be difficult. Life is difficult.”

“Now that you have shared this information with me, you and your ninja-sperm filled penis are never coming anywhere near me again.”

My Review:

Over the Fence is a sweet and moving love story that I didn’t want to end. I adored the characters and the unique and heart-felt story line. The main characters are solitary beings who are lonely, broken, and internally and externally scarred by their own families. Kourtney – with a K, experienced a childhood of neglect and physical and emotional abuse, and although timid and insecure, she somehow managed to maintain a kind and thoughtful soul. Nathan also had a painful past, and although we are to be tantalized by the knowledge that he is tortured by his regrets, we not given the full accounting of what his past actually entailed until late in the book. Written mainly from Nathan’s POV, the narrative is smart, insightful, entertaining, well-paced, easy to follow, somewhat steamy, and full of witty banter. I enjoyed their humorous and fun exchanges as they slowly became acquainted during their evening conversations and shared dinners, each on different sides of a tall fence, and without ever actually seeing each other face-to-face. Their stories squeezed my heart and I reveled in the development of their relationship and the care they took in and for each other as they were both so vulnerable. I enjoyed the book beginning to end, but my favorite part would be their witty texting. This was my first time reading Ms. Moreland, but I have big plans to fan-girl and stalk her listings in the future.
