Great, inspirational read!

Sensing Repetition

The original Greatest Salesman in the World follows the great salesman Hafid's life before and after he reads the 10 scrolls of selling success. In this quite similar sequel, the scrolls of success are lost in a shipwreck, and Hafid is divinely called to write 10 new scrolls in order to replace the old ones.

The new scrolls emphasize these main points:

-Never again will I belittle myself

-I won't start the day without a map

-I will be enthusiastic

-I will never be unpleasant to others

-I will look for triumph in adversity

-I will do my best on every task

-I will focus completely on the task at hand

-I will never wait for opportunity, instead I will seek it

-Each night, I will reflect on what I did, and think about how I can improve

-I will pray to the creator in success and failure

Some of these points look VERY similar to the points made in the first book, so much that I was tempted to give this book 3 stars, but the new scroll emphasizing the foolishness of waiting for opportunity was much needed. Also, the last scroll about prayer was needed, even though it is essentially a repeat of the tenth scroll in the first book. I am very glad that this author puts so much emphasis on prayer.

Aside from repetition, the only thing I didn't like about this book is that the scrolls are treated so majestically, being just a hair under Biblical scripture itself - almost as if to suggest that the ingredients necessary for any kind of success are both the Word of God AND ten extra scrolls. I'm not so sure Paul would agree. The scrolls are helpful for success, but not necessary.

But yeah, I have to agree. Sitting around and waiting for opportunity to come to you is really the worst thing you can do.

He is there to witness every stage of development, from the purchase of a large tract of land in rural Pennsylvania through meetings with local community leaders to get planning approval, to the moment when a family moves into one of the first completed units. The account is forthright about the difficulties New Daleville's creators face in making the project work, but Rybczynski (A Clearing in the Distance, etc.) remains optimistic that "the small lots [and] narrow streets... will all make sense" in the future. Occasionally, he provides historical and cultural perspective in a style reminiscent of Malcolm Gladwell, debunking the myth of urban sprawl and explaining American homeowners' preference for single-family dwellings. But Rybczynski also excels at the "close-up," John McPhee's method of reporting, where every interview reads like an intimate conversation, and a simple walk down neighborhood sidewalks can reveal a wealth of history. Residential real estate development seems like an unlikely topic for a gripping read, and certainly Rybczynski can't be said to have produced a page-turner. But the author of The Perfect House (2002), among other books, and an architecture critic, most recently for Slate, brings considerable stores of knowledge, curiosity, and writing skill to this readable and at times even suspenseful book about a developer's process of building an exurban subdivision in rural Pennsylvania. In a style that is both digressive (he reviews land development patterns as far back as George Washington's day) and leisurely (including long quotes from sources in the manner of Tracy Kidder), Rybczynski follows the project through its conceptual stages, the politically tricky zoning permits process, and community approvals, to, finally, its finished state as a neotraditional "village" community. Along the way, we learn how land gets developed in the era of the new urbanism and pro- and anti-growth debates, and why so many Americans choose to live in suburbs (as opposed to denser city centers) despite often lengthy commutes. The dirt on suburbs, exurbs, zoning, and land development

"The last harvest" refers to farmers who sell, and jealously covet their right to sell, portions of their farms to developers for housing developments. In his book Rybczynski, as the book's long subtitle makes clear, gives the reader a behind-the-scenes look at how one such tract of land became a neo-traditional rural development, New Daleville, Pennsylvania. Rybczynski writes in a level-headed style without any sense of alarm. There is no good guys/bad guys polarity here, just a lot of people trying to make a living (or find a decent and affordable place to live) in unpredictable economic situations without sacrificing the things they value most in community. If Rybczynski has a point of view other than that of an intelligent, informed social observer who has been writing about architecture and urban development for decades, he keeps it well in check. For readers looking for ammunition, this may be a disappointing read.

Many players are introduced--local farmers looking to sell their land, land developers, zoning boards, building contractors, banking and public officials, sanitation specialists, nearby residents, and potential buyers--but no personal profile dominates the story. They merely come in and out of view like passers-by on the much coveted sidewalks of the "village core" in one of the neotraditional garden exurbs Rybczynski describes. This superficiality made the book a little less interesting to me than his earlier books, like CITY LIFE and WAITING FOR THE WEEKEND, in which extensive historical background were provided, and left me craving more data. This kind of information is in the book (like a four page digression into the post-WWII Levittown phenomenon), it's just not as plentiful as this reader wanted. What the book did do for me, however, was to make me a little less judgmental about new subdivisions I see popping up along the interstates in what seem like strange locations and more compassionate towards the vast range of people who have to come to consensus before even the first spadeful of dirt can be turned. That anything ever gets built and that some of it is even decent looking is indeed a testament to human will and the long-standing American love affair with the single family house.

An impressive piece of work

An impressive piece of work, which I read at two sittings. The review you want to read is Penelope Green's, at the New York Times -- I'll put the link in a comment, as Amazon won't allow outside links in their reviews.

Rybczynski writes a very nice portrait of the contemporary subdivision planning and building process, with the focus on a particular exurb near his home in Philadelphia. In the process, you'll learn a lot about the history of suburban living in America -- and perhaps unlearn some persistent misinformation from urban intellectuals who don't like the suburbs. Highly recommended.

good journalism, so-so social science

When this book focuses on the story of one development in Chester County (a suburb of Philadelphia), it is quite good. It is a breezy, easy-to-read story of how one developer views the zoning process.

Some of the things I got from this book:

*Chester County's suburbanites want to limit development as much as possible. As the author notes, "New houses mean extra cars, extra traffic at rush hour, more kids in the schools, and in the long run, higher taxes."

*As a result, Chester County's zoning board tends to favor low density development; the size of an average lot in Chester County increased from half an acre in the 1960s to an acre and a half in the 1990s.

*One reason housing prices are so high is that developers have to bribe local residents to get new development approved. For example, the developer profiled in this book had to buy neighbors' support by giving away 12,500 square feet of open space.

*In Chester County, the price of land has become a greater percentage than ever of housing prices, due to (according to the developer profiled in this book) zoning-induced scarcity. In 1976, the cost of a lot represented only 15% of a Chester County house's selling price- today, the cost of land represents 30% of the sale price.

*Contrary to conventional wisdom among property rights types, homeowners' associations and the restrictive covenants they enforce are not a result of free choice among consumers. According to the developer of New Daleville, "all our projects include community associations. The local municipal governments insist on it" so that the associations (rather than municipalities) will be responsible for the costs of street maintenance.

On the other hand, the book's attempts to describe broader social trends outside Chester County are occasionally simplistic. For example, the book repeats the common chestnut that the East and West Coasts are more anti-development than the rest of the country - but doesn't supply any real evidence for this assertion.

Similarly, the book's general discussion of sprawl is a bit confused. On the one hand, it claims that there is "no significant relationship betweeen sprawl and urban decline" - but on the other, it correctly points out that "there is no widely agreed-upon definition of sprawl". But if we don't know what sprawl is, how can we know what its results are?

Valuable Supplement to Books about the Constitution

While there are many books about the origins of the U.S. Constitution, there are very few about the origins of the Bill of Rights which was established by the new federal government as the first 10 amendments to the Constitution between 1789 and 1791.

This excellent book by historian Robert Allen Rutland (editor of the papers of James Madison) is currently out of print. That is unfortunate since his book (first published in 1955) might still be the best book aimed at ordinary readers who just want to understand how the Bill of Rights evolved and why it was not actually included in the original Constitution. There are other more recent books on the subject by Akhil Reed Amar (2000) and Leonard W. Levy (2001), but these books tackle the amendments individually and appear to be aimed at law students and constitutional lawyers; they also seemed focused on trying to divine the original meanings of the Bill of Rights in light of current arguments about their interpretations. Rutland, in contrast, focuses primarily on the origins of the bill of rights and the process by which they were created without trying to evaluate the amendments in connection with current affairs (or 1955 affairs).

There is a new book by Richard Labunski called "James Madison and the Struggle for the Bill of Rights" (2006) that seems more aligned with Rutland's book, but Labunksi starts his narrative with the Constitutional Convention. In contrast, Rutland traces the origins of the Bill of Rights back to English precedents and the various bills of rights that were created by individual states starting with Virginia in 1776. This is the strength of Rutland's book since he very clearly illustrates the evolution of our civil liberties and why some of the Antifederalists were upset that the Constitution did not contain the same guarantees of liberty that the states had all formulated by 1787. His chapters on the Constitutional Convention and the struggle to ratify the Constitution are very interesting and pointed out facts that other books I've read about the Constitution left out. For instance, religious minorities such as the Baptists generally opposed the new Constitution because they worried that it did not guarantee their freedom of religion.

In his final chapter, Rutland does briefly discuss both expansions and violations of the Bill of Rights between 1791 and 1955. While Rutland focused on violations of civil liberties committed against Japanese Americans during World War II and suspected communists in the 1950s, the lesson that the preservation of our liberties requires constant vigilance is just as relevant today as it was 50 years ago.

More Than a Guide: A Scholarly Work

The novel resonated with me on so many levels that I simply needed to dig deeper, so I bought my first reader's guide ever. What I found was a scholarly work as fascinating as the novel itself. It not only illuminated the structure and symbolism of Roy's book, it provided a rich background of the story's setting in India, comparisons to other Indian authors' works, and the political climate that led Roy to concentrate on social activism after her first and only novel.

I was thrilled by the intellectual stimulation of reading Dr. Mullaney's guide and wanted more. In addition to the many references and recommended reading that she includes in this guide, you can find more of her own writing through the Manchester Metropolitan University's English Research Institute. This one guide has opened new vistas for an old engineer used to reading non-fiction, sci fi, survival stories, poitical thrillers, and the like. I've always appreciated excellent writing whatever the genre, but now am once again a student. Such thorough research, clear thinking, and precise exposition is refreshing and infectious.

Very high quality reader's guide

This is the third of these guides that I have read, and they have all been very good so far. (The other two were about The Poisonwood Bible and The Shipping News.)This one follows the same basic idea. There is a chapter about the author, which is very interesting about Roy's upbringing and political background. And then there is a bigger chapter which looks at the book itself. It's intelligent without being difficult to read, and it's clear without being patronising or dumbed-down. This is a long way away from the Cliffs Notes I used to use back in school! But my favourite chapters in each of these books that I've read so far are the ones about the reviews that the novels got when they were published. It is just fascinating to see how the literary establishment reacted to this novel when it first appeared, and how some people picked up on the resonance of it immediately, and others seemed to miss the point. Anyway, I enjoyed this book very much, and I learned quite a lot about Indian literature in the process.

A Great Update to Beeman's Book

I am a practicing electrical engineer and I have worked in design of power and control systems for 19 years.I am also a registered professional engineer and took the examination in electrical engineering. If there is a book (both good and bad) dealing with industrial electrical design, I probably own a copy. I have also authored a book on the subject myself called the Industrial Power Systems Design and Specification Handbook published by Fairmont Press in 1998 (it is no longer in print). The reference to Beeman in my review title refers to the 1955 book published by Donald Beeman on Power Systems. Beeman and his team worked for GE back in the "golden age" of the 1950's where the best minds for application engineering took the time and the effort to present the nuts and bolts of Power System Engineering in an easy to understand fashion for engineers and technicians. Westinghouse did the same with its book on power distribution engineering (I think that it is still available from the ABB).Sadly,GE never decided to update their reference book written by Beeman and I am not so sure they would (even though GE has very bright people) because of their ability to "sell" this knowledge rather than ensure that people like me (who have to apply their medium voltage distribution products) have a good starting point. Please understand that I am not "anti-business" and understand that the manufacturer has a right to expect that the people picking his products have done their homework. However, up until now, no one has felt it was "important" enough to review the fundamental calculations that power engineers should be able to do BEFORE they pick equipment or evaluate equipment performance (especially in medium voltage systems which behave more things to worry about). In this regard, Khan gives you the foundation you need. The choices of data and examples in Khan's book ensure that the engineer has a non-biased means to develop good calculations that are not unduly biased by either limited experience or by an equipment manufacturer. The problem with most books supposedly geared to "practical" application of electrical engineering knowledge is they are either too superficial (the author does hand-waving and you cannot see how they get from point "A" to point "B") or they are far too complicated for the average user to comprehend and hence have little use.Khan's book does not fall into that trap.There is a very good balance on the level of detail provided here.An example: This is one of the few texts that actually discusses impedance grounded systems and actually gives you the tables that are critical to applying the information (capacitive charging data).It is obvious that the authors scoured the archives of IEEE publications to get the seminal papers (such as those written in IEEE Industrial Applications Society Transactions)that are the "bread and butter" for good calculations.The authors deserve praise for picking the critical topics and then giving the reader enough information to be successful in design.Another example:the authors take some time to explain protective relaying and then give the reader a starting point for the proper settings.Khan's book is the definite analog to John Matthew's book (which was written for the commercial building business).If you notice,John Matthew's text sells on e-Bay or Amazon in its original form for twice what I paid for it when I bought it (John Matthew's book was re-issued by Chapman and Hall). Khan's text has the same potential to become a clasic as Beeman or Matthews.The only thing I would have liked to have seen is information associated with a brief summary relating the design calculations to the selection of actual equipment.In John Matthew's book, he takes the user from a load list through actual load calculations and finally to equipment selection in a "capstone" design problem. I refer to this type of example time and time again. This criticism is not necessarily the end of the world because if you do not have a good theoretical foundation, you are completely at the mercy of suppliers and manufacturer's representatives who may or may not understand what they are doing. Also, equipment technology does change over time as do the dimensions of equipment (such as medium voltage circuit breaker technology). Having said all of this,it is important to note that the original author is unfortunately deceased.The people who put the book together obviously understood Mr. Khan's vision and should be congratulated for a job well done. However, the trap here is to try to "improve" the book in subsequent editions without the guidance of a power engineering master like Mr. Khan obviously was.Lest you doubt me,the classic work "Elements of Power Systems Analysis" (a classic undergraduate power engineering text in its 4th edition at the time I bought it) was "improved" by a new author who added lots of matrix calculations that overly complicate the subject and leave a recent graduate unable to "see the forest from the trees". Sometimes,less is more and the current undergraduate textbook sham in power engineering is a tragic example of where we have devolved to.As another review pointed out for a text called Power Systems Analysis by Bergen and Vittal, the authors simply do not understand what graduates need to know in order to do their first job. Very few professors have the active consulting engineering experience required to balance theory with practice.If they decide to go to a second edition for Khan's book,they need a person of the late Mr.Khan's experience and his clarity for understanding what is important from what is trivial.

This book fills a much needed niche between theory and practical application. It will prove a great reference for inexperienced engineers. As an experienced (30 years) professional I would have liked the depth of subject treatment to be more than twice it is.

Excellent power book

Excellent book for the new or seasoned power electrical engineer. This book covers everything you need to know, and stuff you probably didn't know, to design nearly all aspects of industrial power systems. The one thing it doesn't do is go too in depth about any of the subjects, which isn't that detrimental to this book. Coverage of most of the subjects is sufficient for quick, accurate understanding, and the authors point out many, many additional references for the curious reader to investigate. This is a great summary book, and the summaries make some seemingly complex topics easier to understand. It allows a new concept to be more readily absorbed without getting bogged down by the minute details, but the summaries are still sufficient enough at least to mention those details that need to be considered in a design. Many of the chapters include an exercise for understanding, which is great. There are other books, classic books, that another reviewer has pointed out that are excellent, too. However, I highly recommend this book.

Little Better Than An Hour Researching Online

Not very well-written and a little confusing. I found more informative articles online but it took a minute to compile them. (The online research is worth the time if you REALLY want to know what you're talking about.) But, if you are in a rush and/or looking for something that simply outlines a basic overview and mentions terminology, note that this book is on par with, e.g., SOUND ADVICE and THIS BUSINESS OF MUSIC. Not as in-depth as, e.g., MUSIC MONEY & SUCCESS or the FARBER TREATISE but you may not need that much detail.

Very informative !

I bought this book because I needed, once and for all to see the rules in print. There is a lot of information there and updates on some of what I already know. It kind of rambles on and on in the middle but the information is there. We are in a global village and I would have loved to see information as it applies to international norms, not only USA. I do not live in the USA.Since the digital age is so dynamic a lot of this information might soon be outdated so I am looking forward to newer editions in the future
