A Beautiful, Sensitive Treatment of Prague's Literary Uses

A hauntingly beautiful, sensitive treatment of Prague's literary tradition and the uses authors - both Czech and foreign - have made of the City as a 'palimpsest' of changing images through which they can exorcise their own personal demons and the traumas of the past century. This is especially so of German authors dealing with the traumatic guilt of the holocaust. I also found the book quite sad, as it recounts such immense suffering witnessed and experienced by the city and its inhabitants. Almost unbearable. It also makes for an excellent review of the Czech literary tradition, from its early past to its 19th century giants like Jan Neruda, all the way up to the contemporary lights of Michal Ajvaz and Sylvie Germain. Also invaluable is the author's treatment of Prague's most famous literary son, Franz Kafka. For the first time, I finally understood Kafka's place in the Czech literary tradition, and yes, he does have a place. He would not have become the author so well known today without the profound literary influences upon him of the great Czech authors of the past. The fact that he self-consciously chose to distance himself from this tradition (to universalize himself) and to eradicate from his writings any specific, concrete references both to the literary tradition and to Prague itself as a specific city does not take away from this fact. In this fashion, he somewhat resembles Samuel Beckett in relation to his own Irish literary tradition and the great Western dramatic tradition. For the first time I understood that Kafka does not simply float disembodied in space as an alienated German speaking Jew in the Czech lands. He grew out of the Czech literary tradition, was nourished by it, and in his own countervailing way contributed immeasurably to its enrichment. I book I will surely read again. HIghly recommended.

In the programme for the original 1985 production of Pravda, Brenton wrote: "Pravda means 'the truth'. English newspapers aren't propaganda sheets. The question is, why do so many of them choose to behave as if they are?"

The character of Lambert Le Roux is a South African newspaper tycoon and the owner of several companies, striding his way through the regional papers en route to Fleet Street. Turning broadsheets tabloid, dumbing down the message, and stretching the truth, Le Roux takes no prisoners as he manipulates politicians and creates a media monopoly out of a once-respected industry.

Le Roux is bent on dominating England's press as he has elsewhere in the world. As we see Le Roux accomplish his aims, we see also how the press is not the organ of truth we like to think it is. The dissemination of the truth is no longer its primary goal under the 'Lambert Le Rouxs' of our world. What is important now is what sells.

The play is an epic satire on the media in the Thatcher era; a morality tale about how Andrew, a young liberal journalist, finally succumbs to Le Roux, who makes him editor of a tabloid; and - allegedly - the play is a direct representation of Rupert Murdoch who, even in 1985, was a major force in media ownership.

Howard Brenton's and David Hare's first collaboration since Brassneck in 1973, Pravda was premiered at the National Theatre in May 1985, starring Anthony Hopkins and directed by David Hare, and was awarded the London Standard Best Play Award, the City Limits Best Play Award, and the Plays and Players Best Play Award.

This Modern Classics edition features an introduction by Philip Roberts, Emeritus Professor of Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Leeds, and a foreword by Jonathan Church.

About the Author

Howard Brenton is a British dramatist, noted for his controversial political plays of the 1970s and 80s. He became resident dramatist at the Royal Court in 1972, following on from David Hare. His plays include Revenge, Brassneck (a colloboration with David Hare), The Churchill Play, Epsom Downs, The Romans in Britain, Pravda (also a collaboration with Hare), Berlin Bertie, Paul, Never So Good, and In Extremis. He also wrote the TV programme Spooks and has translated many plays into English. In 2011 he won a Theatregoers' Choice Award for Best Play for Anne Boleyn.

Sir David Hare is a British playwright and director, noted for his critical examination of post-war British society. In 1968 he became a founder of the travelling fringe company, Portable Theatre, which performed some of his early plays. The following year he became resident playwright at the Royal Court Theatre, before being made resident playwright at the Nottingham Theatre in 1973. In 1974 he co-founded the Joint Stock Company. His plays include Slag, Brassneck, Fanshen, Pravda, Racing Demon, Murmuring Judges, The Absence of War, Amy's View, Via Dolorosa, The Permanent Way, Stuff Happens, The Vertical Hour, The Power of Yes, Berlin and Wall. He was knighted in 1998.

A cynical view of the world of modern journalism

Although littered with 80's references which may trip up the reader at first, Pravda is the tale of an honest journalist who see's his profession debased through the growth of tabloids, the sensational shocking headlines and the British public's lust for sex, royalty and nationalism. Into this arena walks La Roux, cunning, devious and calculating, a very thinly veiled Murdoch his personality turns everyone towards him, controlling the worlds of royalty, sports, politics and at the end the world of journalism, forcing even the "hero" of the book to give up his honest journalistic instincts and start calling for smut.

A Great Story Between the Two Great Wars

If you are at all interested in the time period between the two world wars - then read this book. Many of the characters are taken from the pages of history - where they are often portrayed as demonic and one- dimensional. In this story, these same characters - like Goring and Himmler - are given motivation and depth that while not justifying their beliefs - at least allows for a plausible motivation for their often horrendous actions.

“I have sung the Song of the Dead before. As Crown Princess it has been my duty to usher a handful of high ranking puremen with royal blood from this life to the next in formal ceremony. But never have I sung this song for one I loved.”

“I was too young to sing it for my mother. My father sang her song, though how he managed it I will never know. He must have buried his grief deep to make it through that night. And now, I must sing Kai’s.”

She is fire and she is ice. Corrine is a princess not to be reckoned with. Song of Kai proves just that. She does not follow the expectations and rules of a princess who will soon be queen. She follows what she believes is right, not what the lies the court has told her. I find this refreshing because Corrine will become the queen that many will love. She will be the symbol of new change and equality that has been ignored for so long. And now she will aid Nightfall. Scarlett and Corrine will be unstoppable.

Song of Kai is a novella, taking place in between House of Ravens and Daughter of Strife through the eyes of Corrine.

With the book's title, Song of Kai, I must talk about Kai. Kai was a rare character who was thoughtful yet strong, brilliant yet witty, and passionate yet serious. I have to admit, Kai was a very rare character. He embodies all the personalities of what I believe someone should have. Honestly, I started sobbing when I read that scene involving him and *spoilerly*. I will miss him so much.

A major element this novella discussed was the visions of Corrine's Grandmother had of her and Scarlett. This adds an element of wonder to the world of the Nightfall Chronicles. Scarlett and her uprising has been planned and envisioned and there are powers wanting to see her succeed. But there are other forces, possibly stronger forces, that will want Scarlet and Nightfall to fall.

We also meet Jace. He will have a major impact in the later novels because of his technologies and weaponry that are close to the Nephilim. He may aid Nightfall's cause and be a crucial ally or be an enemy and Corrine may have to decide where her loyalties lie.

This novella is a beautiful addition to the Nightfall Chronicles and I can't wait for Daughter of Strife, the third book of the Nightfall Chronicles

Emotionally Enthralling Read!

This is a bridge book after Night of Nyx and before the upcoming Daughter of Strife. You will be emotionally enthralled by this book from the beginning through the end. This book is from Princess Corinne’s point of view while they have traveled to London to say goodbye to her brother Kai and for her to sing the Song of the Dead for him. We get to see her world more in depth and how being a Princess hasn’t made her who she is. She takes us back to different childhood memories of her, Kai & Wytt and also memories of past events involving her father all of which have molded her into who she has become. Presently we not only see how she handles the grief involved in losing a family member & a friend but also how she handles the threat against her family and the Kingdom they rule. You can easily see how her friendship with Scarlett is growing due to both of them being a lot alike and because of who and what they are willing to stand for. We meet new characters like Pip, Jace and Granny Gertrude. We see characters that we have meet in previous books in the series and now see how some of these characters are more interconnected than we previously knew. After reading this phenomenal book I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book in this series the upcoming Daughter of Strife.

My favourite so far

I was given a ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.

When we first meet Princess Corinne in House of Ravens, she appears to be a polite, friendly girl who plays mostly by the rules, that is so not the case there is a lot more to this girl than meets the eye. At the end of House of Ravens we get a small glimpse of the darker side of Princess Corinne, a princess who will do whatever it takes to save the people and do what she believes is right, Song of Kai continues this theme showing us that Corinne is a force to be reckoned with.

The family returns to their home for Kai's memorial, we get to witness glimpses into their past, memories of child hood shared, some of these memories bring granny into the story an old nurse maid who also doubles as a seer, who knows the truth about Scarlett and Corinne's identity that is just one of the many twists in store for the girls.

Dark truths come out that will make you hate King Varian and the Pope more than you already do.

A new rivalry and love interest develops for our intriguing princess and she faces a challenge she was not expecting against an enemy whose identity is a complete surprise well at least to me.
