This book is awesome!! Have not yet made all the recipes but the several I have tried are awesome!!! Easy to follow and nice pictures!!

The one comment is that the focaccia recipe as written is 1/2 a cookie sheet.(there was no indication of size of baking pan in the recipe) Next time I make it i am going to try doubling the recipe, I think my zojirushi bb-cec20 will be able to handle it and the recipe as written does not make enough.
There are several recipes that just use the bake cycle, for those I just mix and bake in the regular oven at 375.
But this book itself is super!! The peanut bread recipe and challah are out of this world!! But the others I have tried are awesome too!!!

Practical, informative and easy to read

This book is a fantastic guide to online marketing, and the Internet in general.

As a marketing practitioner, I've been finding my way own way through the online world for some time now but have always wondered if what I was doing was 'correct' and it would take me ages to find out what I needed to know through researching online articles, blogs, etc.

I found this book to be fairly concise and focused. The references to other online articles that it includes are vast and can they be very absorbing. The best part about this is that it is written by someone that clearly has vast experience in the field and, unlike with some online articles, you get the feeling that what is advised is really 'best practice'.

I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in digital marketing.

This book is really well put together. It is the ultimate guide if you know about digital but still can't seem to put everything together. This book gives everything structure. After reading this book everything started to fall in place for me. The whole book is structured into 4 main sections - Think, Create, Engage and Optimise. This is just so brilliantly put together. Pay for this book it worth every single cent. Robe Stokes and Quirk have done a magically job with this book and it's now my number one companion on digital matters. This book helps me structure my digital presentations, plans and even reports very professionally, i just work through the presented steps and i end up with a very professionally document. For instance, I had just finished a proposal on social media strategy, after reading this book, i ended up adding the flow on page 373 which talks about the uses on social media. During the presentation to client, we ended up talking about that flow for 60% of the entire presentation.

Author Jon Ronson writes a column about family life for London's Guardian newspaper and has made several acclaimed documentaries. The Men Who Stare at Goats is his bizarre quest into "the most whacked-out corners of George W. Bush's War on Terror," as he puts it. Ronson is inspired when a man who claims to be a former U.S. military psychic spy tells the journalist he has been reactivated following the 9-11 attack. Ronson decides to investigate. His research leads him to the U.S. Army's strange forays into extra-sensory perception and telepathy, which apparently included efforts to kill barnyard animals with nothing more than thought. Ronson meets one ex-Army employee who claims to have killed a goat and his pet hamster by staring at them for prolonged periods of time. Like Ronson's original source, this man also says he has been reactivated for deployment to the Middle East.

Ronson's finely written book strikes a perfect balance between curiosity, incredulity, and humor. His characters are each more bizarre than the last, and Ronson does a wonderful job of depicting the colorful quirks they reveal in their often-comical meetings. It reads like fiction, with plenty of dialogue and descriptive detail, but as Ronson's investigation into the government's peculiar past doings creeps into the present-and into Iraq-it will raise goose bumps. As Ronson reveals, a secret wing of the U.S. military called First Earth Battalion was created in 1979 with the purpose of creating "Warrior Monks," soldiers capable of walking through walls, becoming invisible, reading minds and even killing a goat simply by staring at it. Some of the characters involved seem well-meaning enough, such as the hapless General Stubblebine, who is "confounded by his continual failure to walk through his wall." But Ronson (Them: Adventures with Extremists) soon learns that the Battalion's bizarre ideas inspired some alarming torture techniques being used in the present-day War on Terror. One technique involves subjecting prisoners to 24 hours of Barney the Purple Dinosaur's song, "I Love You," and another makes use of the Predator, a small, toy-like object designed by military martial arts master Pete Brusso that can inflict a large amount of pain in many different ways ("You can take eyeballs right out... with this bit," Brusso tells Ronson). Ronson approaches the material with an open mind and a delightfully dry sense of humor, which makes this an entertaining, if unsettling, read. He interviews—or, in some cases, tries to interview—the people behind the formerly top-secret program (which did, yes, involve men staring at goats); he explains their mind-bending (and occasionally cutlery-bending) ideas; and explores the weirdly shocking ways in which some newfangled 1970s notions about psychological interrogation techniques have manifested themselves in today's War on Terror. This is not an investigative report of conspiracy.

Some reviewers have completely missed the point. This is the author's journey researching an inane army experiment, and what manifestations may remain. This book is no more an investigative proof than Ronson's last novel was an argument for joining extremists. This book is Errol Morris, not Art Bell.

Wholly enjoyable and entertaining, it's hard to remember at times this is non-fiction, as some of the interviews seem insane. The presentation base comes from declassified goverment documents. However, they are not included, nor are there any footnotes, because Ronson is not trying to convince the reader of anything. He is writing about his interviews and conversations investigating the chronology of the "First Earth Battalion" manual. I believe Ronson started this project intending it to be much funnier (he is a comedian after all), but some of the subject matter and personas he found, though entertaining, aren't laughable: staring at a goat trying to kill sounds funny, but imagine the views of a person who wishes they had the ability to kill people with their mind. So it is a perspective on the legacy of a few persons relieved of common sense, that were given a little power and a budget.

You might enjoy this book if you:

- Find Jon Stewart (The Daily Show) funny.

- Like character documentaries, like those by Errol Morris.

- Enjoy psychology.

- Want a light introduction to a bizzare goverment-funded experiment.

You probably won't enjoy this book if you:

- Are looking for hard documentation on goverment conspiracy

worth reading, but...

I had the hardest time deciding whether or not to read this book based on the various Amazon reviews. While I love a good conspiracy theory or two, I try to avoid books either written by conspiracy fanatics who have no objectivity, or conspiracy comics who treat the subject from a distance and use it to poke fun. As you can imagine, it's tough to find middle ground.

Goats ends up being worth reading for fitting somewhere into my realm of acceptibility, but sadly not enough to merit more than 3 stars. Ronson definitely keeps his distance during the first half of the book - as military men, some of whom are clearly unhinged to some extent, talk about crazy programs, Ronson makes it clear that he's not confirming or denying the allegations, merely quoting. And here, the book takes a comic tone and allows the reader to decide who to believe. On top of this, the book feels light, as if little research beyond interviews was done. Perhaps there's no other way to get this kind of information. Regardless, every chapter was more of a series of anecdotes than anything.

For the second half, the tone turns more serious as it becomes clear that there is a spider web connecting many of the participants of various army plots, and here Ronson suddenly suddenly gets too serious without enough evidence. I was fine with the tone change, and the book does lead you on the same inner feeling: at first, "this is nuts" to "hey, maybe there's something seriously wrong going on." The problem is that this is where we needed a lot more hardcore research. And yet the book still felt light and airy. I mean, Ronson didn't even bother to look up the name of the song or band that features the words "Burn Mother*ucker, Burn!" A small point, but one that will stand out to American readers as an obvious example of not doing all the homework. Also, the history of these programs is basically presented as Ronson discovered them, and the problem with this is that he backtracks and overlaps on himself a zillion times rather than present the material sequentially. Again, I see the reasons for taking us on the same path of discovery he did, but I'm not convinced it was for the best.

I think that there's a better book that could've been written buried in here somewhere, and what actually hit the page isn't necessarily bad. It just ultimately comes off as too light to be as important as it could have been. For those who were in my quandry of deciding whether to buy it, I recommend it, but I felt a lot better buying it used.

Confusing..but guess that the point

I've always been a fan of Jon Ronson's work - but this was really tough to read.
It's jumped around SO much and there were SO many characters that I just couldn't keep track. I tried to just let it wash over me when reading, but it was really frustrating. I guess that's part of the point of the book. Would be interested to see how this translated into the film.

Must Have and Must Keep!

This book was the perfect walk through in trying to understanding legal writing as a first year law student. I particularly enjoyed examples of memos that show the CREAC format (or variations of it). The examples, in my opinion, makes the book standout in comparison to others. The grammar refresher was also helpful in reviewing key concepts. To this day, I still reference the handout to go over memo formats for various law clerk positions. I attribute this book together with the Bluebook as my success in legal writing. I'll forever keep this book in my shelf to reference.

Like many of Murakami's heroes, Hajime is, at least on the surface, a thoroughly conventional man: married with children, the owner of an upscale jazz bar in suburban Tokyo. And yet, there is another Hajime, disconnected from his outer self, drifting in its wake, waiting quietly to be summoned to action. The summons comes in the form of Shimamoto, Hajime's childhood sweetheart, whom he hasn't seen for 20 years but who has never been out of his thoughts. She returns one rainy night, walking into Hajime's bar, and the effect is a little like what happens when Ilse walks into Rick's in Casablanca ("Of all the gin joints in all the world . . ."). But it is something more, too. As always, Murakami drenches his story in American pop culture, but here he uses those illusions to set us up. What happens with Hajime and Shimamoto lacks the tragic tonic chord that melodramatic love stories give us at the end; instead, there is only mystery and confusion. In Murakami's world, secret selves and other realities are forever lurking beneath the shifting sands of the everyday. If this examination of one of those selves is less grand than we've come to expect from one of the masters of the contemporary novel, it is also more intimate and every bit as unsettling. Bill Ott

Simply Surreal

Ever since I first read Murakami starting with
"Sputnik Sweetheart" I am hooked on to everything he
writes. I do not know what he does to me but everytime
I read what he writes - its like a tidal wave lashing
over me and I cannot help it. I love the feeling. I
cherish it for a long long time. South o the Border
begins with a 37-year old narrator Hajimme - the owner
of an upswanky jaz bar in Japan talking about his life
- from where it began to where it is.
A Japanese love story; indeed, a Japanese Casablanca:
it doesn't sound too promising, does it? But ignore
the blurb - they've got to get people to pick it up
after all - and dip a toe into the world of Haruki
Murakami. This is, perhaps, the perfect place to start
for newcomers - no wells; no sheep; no slightly
off-kilter worlds, just a simple, if morally complex
story exquisitely told. It's the prose stye (insert
here a discourse on the art of translation, but the
voice is Murakami) which will seduce you, not the
narrator - he is morally ambivalent, and not in a good
way. In the hands of such an accomplished writer,
however, one is easily drawn in to Hajime's world.
Hajime would like to be a good man, but he has
impulses; impulses which cause him to damage those he
loves. The simple tale revolves around his childhood
sweetheart finding him and endangering everything he's
worked for. So far, so predictable; but the way in
which Murakami teases out Hajime's character, and
faces up to the moral dilemmas without judging his
motives - they are simply laid out for us to observe -
produces a true feeling of uncertainty in the reader,
and compels you through the story wishing that both
outcomes were possible. A cunningly crafted tale,
carried off with thoughtful aplomb, and the ideal
jumping-off point for further exploration of this most
intriguing of authors.

Standard Murakami fare

Not one of Murakami's most profound works, but still very insightful and relatable. I think many people might have problems with the narrator, and he definitely is a prick, but some of the themes in the book are still very relatable, despite the unusually unlikable Murakami hero. If you like Murakami, you'll like this book.

A solid work, but not his best one.

Love Murakami but this wasn't one of his best novels. Still, a good story that leaves you with a strong emotional memory, rather than a memory of the plot.
