About the Author
Richard Blanco, selected as the 2013 inaugural poet by President Barack Obama, is the author of three poetry collections: Directions to The Beach of the Dead, winner of the PEN/Beyond Margins Award; City of a Hundred Fires, winner of the Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize, and Looking for The Gulf Motel. He has also published two chapbooks: One Today: A Poem for Barack Obama's Inauguration, and Boston Strong to benefit those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings. Exploring themes of Latino identity and place, his poems have appeared in Best American Poetry 2000 and Best American Prose Poems and have been featured on NPR. Blanco is a fellow of the Bread Loaf Writers Conference, recipient of two Florida Artist Fellowships, and has taught at Georgetown and American universities. A builder of cities and poems, Blanco is also a professional civil engineer.

Excellent book written by someone who really had lived the life on both shores.

I really like his poetry. I felt that this book was very moving. Since he grew up in Cuba , he really wrote with feeling and knowledge knowing what it was like to have a split family, one on one shore and the rest on another.

About the Author
Benjamin Pierce received a B.S. in Biology from Southern Methodist University and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. Ben is currently Professor of Biology and holder of the Lillian Nelson Pratt Chair at Southwestern University, Georgetown, TX. He is a population geneticist who conducts ecological and evolutionary research on amphibians. Ben has authored a number of articles in research journals and several books, including: The Family Genetics Sourcebook, a guide to genetics for the layperson; Genetics: A Conceptual Approach, a general genetics textbook; Genetics Essentials: Concepts and Connections, a brief genetics textbook; and Transmission and Population Genetics: A Short Course, a textbook for courses in transmission and population genetics.� Ben is a member of the steering committee of the 21st Century Science Coalition, a group of scientists who support strong science standards for Texas public schools. He is the President of the Texas Academy of Science, is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi, and is a Fellow of the Texas Academy of Science. He currently serves on the editorial board of Bioscience. He has received research and teaching grants from the Natural Science Foundation, the W. M. Keck Foundation, the 3M Foundation, the National Park Service, the Williamson County Conservation Foundation, and the National Geographic Society.

Easy to read and useful

The required book for my genetics course was dry so I supplemented it with this book. I frequently used it throughout the course and found it very helpful. I ended up doing the best on the problem-solving questions in that course due to the concepts I learned in this book.

Solid text

I used this with my genetics class over the summer. The information is very clear and well organized. I found it incredibly useful. The inserts on real-world issues in genetics were very interesting as well.

However, sometimes this book is quirky in an odd way. For example, one of the chapter introductions refers to Helicobacter pylori as a 'sexy bacterium.' I'm not kidding. It's good for a laugh, but what were the authors thinking?! Nonetheless it has no effect on the material in the text, and thus I would recommend it for a genetics class.

Andreas Schmidt-Rhaesa studied biology at the universities in Giessen and Gottingen, Germany, where he received his PhD in 1996, working on the ultrastructure and phylogeny of horsehair worms (Nematomorpha). As postdoc, he worked in Jim Garey's lab at the Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and at the University of South Florida in Tampa, USA on molecular systematics of nematomorphs. Between 1998 and 2004 he was scientific assistant in the working group of Thomas Bartolomaeus at the University of Bielefeld, where he then did a postdoc between 2004 and 2007. Since April 2007 he has been Curator for Lower Invertebrates at the Zoological Museum of the University of Hamburg. His research interests include animal morphology and systematics, with particular interest in the taxa Nematomorpha, Gastrotricha and Priapulida.

Steffen Harzsch obtained his PhD from the University of Bielefeld, Germany in 1995 working on neurogenesis in crustacean larvae at the Department of Neurobiology and in the lab of Klaus Anger at the Marine Biological Station on the island of Helgoland in the North Sea. After a postodc at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and a Heisenberg Fellowship of the German Research Foundation, he worked from 2007 to 2008 as a group leader for neuroanatomy in the Department of Evolutionary Neuroethology at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany. In 2009, he received tenure as a full Professor of Cytology and Evolutionary Biology at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald, Germany. His expertise is in studies on neurophylogeny and NeuroEvoDevo of arthropods and Chaetognatha.

Gunter Purschke, Professor at the University of Osnabrueck, Germany, is working on morphology, systematics, phylogeny and evolution of Annelida and related taxa. His research interests currently focus on evolution and diversity of photoreceptor cells and eyes, of the central nervous system and body wall musculature. He studied biology and chemistry at the University of Gottingen, and earned his PhD in Zoology in 1984. He was subsequently assistant at the University of Osnabrueck to the chair of Systematic Zoology (Prof. W. Westheide). After having received the venia legendi for Zoology (1997) he was appointed as extraordinary professor in 2002. Since 2004 he has been working with the chair of Zoology and Developmental Biology (Professor A. Paululat).

Interesting and Thought Provoking

This book is a fast read and will keep your interest throughout. I found myself captivated by the characters and indeed identified strongly with one of them. In fact, one of the beautiful things about this book is that nearly everyone in this subculture will be able to see much of himself in one (or more) of the characters.

Not only was the book enjoyable, but I found it instructive and thought provoking. I feel like I have found out a bit about myself and this will help me live a better life from here on.

Pick up the book, you won't be disappointed.

Not a inspiring book on how to make Chicago style deep dish pizza's. If you already know how to make pizza, or have a recipe for a good pizza dough, you are set. Save your money. Books amateur layout lacks the ability to get taste bud's salivating with its black and white photo's, of dough, and inability to reveal the secrets to a Uno's or Gino's East Deep Dish pizza. No secrets are revealed here that can't already be found on the Internet, for free. Search, experiment, trial and error, no matter the outcome, you will still have a recipe for a good pizza.

I never write reviews, but felt like I had to for this purchase. I got this book and the recommended equipment to make a Chicago-style pizza. I have to say I was a little nervous as I'd never made one before. But I followed the directions, which were easily understood, and the pizza turned out better than we've ever had in any restaurant! "Making pizza to your taste" is stressed in the book, so YES, you can make your pizza better than anyone else can! I learned many other things like what brand of tomatoes to buy (we used Contadina crushed tomatoes), not to buy preseasoned tomatoes, not to precook the sausage, the flour matters (we used King Arthur unbleached all purpose flour), proofing yeast is a must (directions are provided), and how to season the pizza pan. The book has lots of guidance. I think it's the best cookbook I own! I can't wait to make another pizza!!
