Fascinating Look at My Favorite Cuisine

Anyone remotely serious about BBQ has invariably watched one of those PBS series on grilling and BBQing and has learned a little of the history. This is particularly true of Steven Raichlen's shows. But when it comes to feeding that curiosity through books, mostly we consume tomes on technique and recipes. That's great -- gotta know the best way to smoke a large roast without drying it out or how to keep fish from falling apart.

Until now. Until Tim Miller's "Barbecue: A History (The Meals Series)." Miller's a historian, not a chef. While he obviously loves 'Q, he knows what a proper history is as well.

Miller gets through the types of barbecue, the American culture of it, and what BBQ is like globally. But he also has a strong focus on barbecue from the 1800s onward, when the American culture and industry really took off, from random stands to complete restaurants emphasizing some nuance of this great cuisine.

Particularly interesting are the stories behind known brands, like KC Masterpiece. A sauce was developed by a physician who sold it in Kansas City. The success led to a small, but growing chain of restaurants. Bad business decisions were made, fostered by a mix of ignorance of how to run a restaurant and family in-fighting, and now, today, there are no restaurants left. The sauce exists, of course, in several varieties. Miller tells the tale of Smokey Bones, Famous Dave's and others.

A fascinating read for the BBQ fan from start to finish. I fully recommend "Barbecue: A History (The Meals Series)" by Tim Miller.

A Parting Glimpse Of The Infinite

"Tibetan Sage" is the last book T. Lobsang Rampa wrote, his fond farewell to his loyal audience and a last attempt to silence his critics and expose fraud conducted in his name. Rampa died in 1981, just a few months shy of his 71st birthday, and "Tibetan Sage" was published the previous year. In the epilogue of this, his final book, he courageously speaks of his passing as being both inevitable and soon.

And what a wonder his last book is. It is full of the things that keep one riveted to Rampa's spiritual struggle, the essential core of truth that makes it impossible to turn away and accuse him of lies and fakery.

The book begins with Rampa as a very young man, not quite at the level of Buddhist monk but still a promising student. With his mentor, the Lama Mingyar Dondup, he sets out to rescue a hermit overseeing a small hermitage in the mountains of Tibet. Alas, a sudden earthquake topples the hermit to his death, and does serious injury to the Lama Mingyar Dondup's legs, who finds himself trapped under a boulder.

In the process of freeing his mentor, the young Rampa stumbles onto a secret compartment in the mountainside and carries the Lama inside. The compartment houses a flying saucer, which Rampa explores with the Lama and which will become the primary setting for the rest of the book.

Much to Rampa's surprise, the Lama is already familiar with the languages used by the aliens and with much of their technology. The ship has lain dormant for a million years, yet everything is still pristinely clean and functional. Some alien occupants are discovered frozen at their control consoles in a state of suspended animation. They remain that way throughout Rampa's story, and the book's real focus is on Rampa and the things he learns there, not on coversations with aliens.

There is often a dramatic shift of consciousness associated with a human being actually boarding a UFO called "the Oz Effect." It is given that name because the extreme contrast between the two environments resembles that moment in "The Wizard of Oz" when Dorothy crosses over from the black and white world of Kansas to the Technicolor land of Oz. This is certainly applicable to the changes Rampa undergoes in "Tibetan Sage," as he witnesses holographic recordings of the formation of the planet up through the Second World War, all stored in the mythic Hall of Records and accessed onboard the flying saucer. At times, Rampa feels as though he is living and breathing in those previous and even future times, a degree of realism still not attainable by our own current technology. Sadly, most of what he sees involves bloody warfare both among people and between the gods themselves, another testimony to alien truthfulness.

In his introduction, Rampa adamantly declares that "Tibetan Sage" and in fact all of his books are the literal and unvarnished truth and not mere science fiction. His deep convictions in that regard may indicate that he is another in the long line of "literary abductees," people who write about bizarre spiritual experiences without consciously being aware that they are interacting with an alien species that is strange and mysterious yet basically benign. As with most abductees, Rampa never doubts that something real has actually happened to him, and the things he has in common with other abductee accounts are too numerous to mention, but include being shown holographic images of the world drowning in the flames of warfare and being in a dreamlike state surrounded by various alien machines whose function defies imagination.

"Tibetan Sage" may be Rampa's final book, but it remains the story of a soul in progress and thus is never quite finished. To read the book is to marvel at the blurring of the lines between the alien abduction phenomenon and the nature of the sacred, and one wishes Rampa well as he soldiers on to his astral paradise and beyond.

Who Wrote This?

Having read The Third Eye, Doctor From Lhasa and a couple of Rampa's volumes later volumes, I was keenly interested in what I expected to be his detailed account of wonders and esoteric information found in one of the hidden intra-mountain caves/tunnels mentioned briefly in other works.

I was puzzled at first, then more and more disappointed as I read the first couple of chapters. Finally, I stopped reading in utter disgust.

Whoever wrote this slop could not have been the Lobsang Rampa who wrote the other well-known volumes. In Tibetan Sage, Rampa comes across as a simpleton and the Lama Mingyar Dondup as a condescending co-investigator. The syntax and writing style are clumsy and primitive, quite unlike Rampa's mature prose. There is no clear link that associates the events described in this book with other events in his life, except that he was still in training at Chakpori. The writer shows no insight, no reflection as would be the case of a mature chronicler recalling a major episode from his early teens. And the events/information described don't fit well with the knowledge and beliefs described in his other books.

Either all his other works had the benefit of competent editors while this one was left as a true example of his fifth-grade skill in Engligh composition, or this book is a fraudulent attempt to capitalize on Rampa's mystique. The latter seems more likely.

Save your money and skip this perversion of the T. Lobsang Rampa story.

Not nearly as good as the first books

Having read about half of Lobsang Rampa's books more than 30 years ago (and loving them!), I decided to try this last one. It is quite disappointing, and almost seems like someone else wrote it! The content is weird (not that the original books weren't), but it seems like the whole style of writing is completely different, too! His first three books were gems, and this just doesn't measure up. I don't know what the problem is, but would recommend buying the first books instead of this crazy one.

About the Author
Thomas Brown is a postgraduate student at the University of Southampton, where he is studying for an MA in Creative Writing. He has been Co-Editor of Dark River Press and has written for a number of magazines, websites and independent publishers. In 2010 he won the University of Southampton's Flash Fiction Competition for his story, 'Crowman'. He is also a proud member of the dark fiction writing group: Pen of the Damned. Literary influences include Friedrich Nietzsche, S. T. Joshi and Russian novelist Andrei Makine.

Truly Chilling Novel

Lynnwood grabs you starting with its opening line, and keeps you hooked for the rest of its wild ride. The novel really showcases Mr. Brown's greatest strength as a writer, talents which manifested themselves in both Revive and Hell's Water, but have really blossomed in Lynnwood. Mr. Brown is a master of character development and psychology; he is able to almost literally place the reader inside the heads of the characters, so that you are not reading their thoughts, you're thinking them. The fast-paced and very accessible writing really help the reader become one with the characters, until it does not feel like you are reading the story, but experiencing it.

Along with this naturally comes a set of well-developed central characters who are extremely believable and seem very real, from their first, sane appearances until their final howls as primal madmen. I felt sympathy for each and every one of the characters, and felt their feelings almost as acutely as my own. Mr. Brown did a superb job of portraying the effects of the horror of Lynnwood on the main characters, and through them made me wonder what effect it would have had on me.

Mr. Brown also makes a sparse and very effective use of poetry and diary entries to add to the effect, and makes the world come even more to life. Even more impressive, however, was his command of epicurean language. His subtle descriptions of every item of food consume add a sense of horror and revulsion throughout the entire novel, and through them he manages to evoke the very hunger he writes about in his readers. The food becomes an unnoticed yet absolutely essential part of the story, and serves to demonstrate Mr. Brown's mastery of the language.

All in all, definitely worth the read!

Horror has a new Voice in Storytelling...

This book kept me on the edge of my seat. I discovered Brown's short stories online and became an instant fan. His full-length novel Lynnwood proved to be another amazing work of art in his budding career. His style is clean and fresh, woven between beautifully lyrical passages that kept me drooling for the next page, and the story tension built through steady pacing into a climax I had not anticipated. Brown exposes human nature through the idiosyncrasies of a peculiar town, while playing mind tricks on the reader in this spectacular debut novel.

Drool-worthy psychological horror novel - amazing debut

It's difficult to pinpoint what makes horror drip from the spine of LYNNWOOD without spoiling its main course. It disturbs without resorting to a a single horror cliche. Upon first glance, LYNNWOOD dictates the story of Freya, mother of two, who lives in the quaint English countryside. Blessed by the fortune left from deceased parents, Freya spends much of her time wandering the town and surrounding forest. Without the sparse mentions of modern luxuries and dates in the recent years, the simplicity of the villagers' lifestyles would leave readers believing this story occurred in the middle ages rather than the modern age.

Using terminology and British spellings for words, the atmosphere is strengthened by the expertise of the author's word choice. The descriptions are so crisp that I could nearly smell the bacon and egg breakfast that Freya cooked and gorged herself with every morning or hear Freya's footsteps through her well-traveled path through the forest. I felt the hairs on my arms prickle when the setting switched to the abandoned railroad tunnel.

The frequent flashbacks into Freya's blissful childhood illuminated the cracking sanity and simple `wrongness' of the villagers' behavior when the focus shifted back to present day. A hunger builds from the first scene until the last and as a reader I didn't feel satisfied until the last page was turned in this psychological horror.

And so I leave you with a review that aims to tease your taste buds rather than stuff you with fillers (mostly because its too easy to spoil the surprise). As with any horror book done well, how the story unfolds matters as much as the content and this book doesn't disappoint. (A)

It feels wrong to laugh. But.

I think I expected much more from this book. It did not flow, it was as if jumbled thoughts were just put down on paper.Someof the chapters were good, but the others were rather random....It was not a " WOW " factor for me. Sorry read better Autobiography's.

Sunil Kapila, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., is Robert W. Browne Endowed Professor and Chair, Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He also serves as the Graduate Orthodontics Program Director at the University of Michigan. Dr. Kapila is the director of the Moyers Symposium, a prestigious conference held at the University of Michigan, which each year focuses on a specific topic in orthodontics, dentofacial orthopedics and craniofacial biology.
