simply weak

Aside from being almost 100% ... from the russian book by N.Cherkashin, this made-for-american-house-wives booklet reads almost like a Disney version of "Das Boot".
The chronology is good BUT it is available on about 100 websites now, anyway.
The writing style is that of a village daily reporter. The usual american stereotypes about Russia are omnipresent and do not fit well at all with the hero-submariner image.
Finaly: if Burleson wanted to write a good book, he should have gone to Russia to do research! Instead he browses the internet and reads a Russian author. Voila, "Kursk Down" is born.

Couldn't put 'Kursk Down' down

'Kursk Down' will appeal to anyone who is interested in the events that led to the demise of one of the Russian's state-of-the-art Oscar-II class SSGN submarine - the Kursk. I bought it for this very reason as the story intrigued me and wanted to find out more as to what had happened to K-141.
Initially I was annoyed by the introduction where the author tried to reconstruct what may have occurred on board the Kursk before the disaster that sent it and it's 118 crew to the ocean floor. It's seemed more like a start to a Tom Clancy novel and devoid of actual facts. However as the book began to document the actual findings of the Kursk investigation and salvage operation, the scenario takes on a new light and seems a good indication (as any) of what may have occurred on board the Kursk albeit it being still somewhat speculative. The book after this initial hypothetical scenario then begins to document the chronological string of events of the disaster, from the military, political and civilian perspectives which is very interesting.
The book is very light and easy to follow but I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of any diagrams or adequate pictures. I was also dissapointed by the lack of details following the subsequent raising of the Kursk. Source information throughout the book was a little lacking. However these things aside, the book did eventually quench my thirst for what had happened to the Kursk. It subsequently pursued me to find more info on the net but for the 239 pages (of actual info) and the price of the book - I give it 4 stars.

The sinking of the Russian submarine Kursk.

This is a good overview of the sinking the Russian submarine Kursk and the general state of the Russian Navy. With the breakup of the Soviet Union, the defense establishment has received far less attention and resources than before. This contributed to the sinking of the sub.
I was particularly interested in what motivated the claims of the Russian Navy that another submarine collided with the Kursk resulting in her loss. The facts are otherwise, but the political motivation to blame an external power was there. Incompetence by either personnel on the Peter the Great in shooting off a missle or in the torpedo technicians on the Kursk (not Navy personnel) led to this disaster. Old habits die hard in Russia, so someone else to blame was necessary. Burleson does a good job of writing about this in the book.

Before long, Teddy and Carl are fending off man-eating earthworms the size of buses. A helicopter crash nearby brings Kevin and Sarah, the last two survivors of an outpost in Baltimore, into Teddy's story; their tale makes up the even more bizarre second part of the book that explores, graphically, the insanity doom can inspire. It all leads to a slam-bang showdown back at Teddy's house with a creature so monstrous it scares even the killer annelids. The awkward framing story—a crushed, dying Teddy writing the novel in a notebook in the tale's aftermath—though a nod to H.P. Lovecraft and H.G. Wells (both obvious influences), can detract from the plot's urgency. Clunky dialogue also slows the action, but the enormity of Keene's pulp horror imagination, and his success in bringing the reader over the top with him, is both rare and wonderful, and more than outweighs these small concerns. Keene does it again

I am an avid Keene fan. His zombie books are fun and original, and this story didn't disappoint either.

It has been raining for 42 days and nights, and most of the world is now under water. No one is sure what has brought about this apocalyptic event and to the author's credit, he leaves that conclusion to the individual reader. This is a story about the end of civilization as we know it and the last survivors. It is not a happy tale, but it is an exciting one.

Teddy Garnett, an elderly widower and his best friend; Carl Seaton, are trying to wait out the rain and survive the giant worms that are plaguing Punkin Center, West Virginia. They are up on the side of a mountain, looking down at an ocean of water which covers the surrounding towns. Teddy is dying for a dip of snuff, but there is none to be found. He is horrified when he witnesses a bird being eaten one day by a huge worm that jettisons up out of the ground and snatches the Robin out of mid-air. He is soon joined by Earl, the town nut case, and a group of folks that have traveled by helicopter from the north eastern coast.

The book is unusual in that it tells Teddy and Carl's story, then when the helicopter crashes, it switches and tells the tale of what has taken place elsewhere in the U.S. It is a nice touch and very powerful, in my opinion. The thought of slimy, writhing, smelly worms is alone enough to make most of us want to hurl, but just imagine those worms becoming the hunters and mankind, the hunted.

This book takes it's time developing the characters, as well as, the story itself. Keene is a master at creating characters you can identify and sympathize with. This is a must read for anyone who enjoys horror with a plot and not just a bloodfest.

Rain Rain Go Away...

As I began reading this book I could not help but think of Dean Koontz's THE TAKING. The two are similar in theme and share some descriptions. This book is told from the point of view of an old man living in the Appalachians. It has been raining continuously all over the world for more than forty days. What isn't flooded is damp. Mold and fungus are growing on everything. It is not imagined that things could get any worse. But they do.

The continuous rain has driven giant worms to the surface. First they are only as big around as dogs. But larger and larger worms show up. These worms are not content with drawing nourishment from the dirt. Instead they have taken to eating anything that moves; birds, cows, people. Then, unlike most horror novels, the cast begins to grow and we get glimpses of what has been going on elsewhere. We also get glimpses of what might be causing the destruction.

As with the earlier novels I have read by Brian Keene, the action does not stop until the last page. I do not know if this tale will be followed up as THE RISING was followed by CITY OF THE DEAD, but this one has a more satisfying ending than THE RISING although not as final as in the later. Since the book opens just as things are really getting bad, there is little time wasted on a slow build. Instead it starts pretty fast and picks up speed. If you liked his earlier books, you are sure to like this one.

my summary will be, like the title states, that reading, brings more to the imagination that just pictures. There are beautiful books out there, dont get me wrong, I love them. But this book talks about something, its meaningful. Its gets you thinking and wanting to DO architecture.

Hot Killer and Hotter Ballerina!

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Dante Hart is a hitman for the Zappia crime family, who is sent to eliminate a man that owes twenty thousand. Dante sees a picture of Terrence Vaughn’s ballerina daughter, Lucy Vaughn and comes up with an arrangement that will keep Mr. Vaughn alive and free of debt and get him the daughter. Dante is a man with many secrets and a deadly skill.
Lucy Vaugh is a talented ballerina that lives her life in the hopes of doing more and proving herself to those who think that her daddy has gotten her where she has made it. When she learns that she is to spend the night with a hitman so that her father can live, she is livid. She is known for being sassy and brave, but as she sees Dante, her body betrays her thoughts.
As time goes on, her relationship with Dante grows, but as soon as his true identity is revealed, things go terribly wrong. Lucy loses everything and revenge is what fuels her, but Dante has to get her to safety and not allow her emotions to lead her to what is sure to be her death. Fox Fitzpatrick from Book 1 is now being chased by Dante’s twin siblings for outing the organization, but Dante chooses to help Lucy heal and not chase after Fox.
This book is an amazing read. It will keep you on the edge of your seat just waiting to see what happens next. It contains action, mystery and crime, but most important it contains the power to keep you entranced and wanting to get involved in the lives of the characters. Tabatha Kiss has nailed it with this book and I can’t wait to read more of her work.

Hit Me and Dance the Night with Passion-Great Mafia Romance

Dante Hart is a hitman for the Zappia crime family and what he wants most is to get out. His jobs are to sent to kill people -for him it never seems to end. He is sent on a job to kill Terrence Vaughn and when he is sent a picture of the man's daughter, Lucy, who is a dancer, he decides he has to have her. Dante comes up with this arrangement that will get Lucy's dad saved from a bullet and Lucy him--but nothing is never quite as it seems or as easy.
Lucy thinks her dad is a good dad but when she finds out that she has to "sleep with a killer" to keep her dad alive, OMG, I expected the sky to come falling down and lighting to hit Dante and kill him where he stood. She was angry. She didnt want to be a prostitute to keep her dad alive. Lucy and Dante meet and have an amazing night but tragedy happens in the morning and this is the story of what happens AFTER and how tragedy can change people and its what you make of it or let it make of you. Dante and Lucy are amazing people. There are secrets and there is anger but the passion is amazing. I like the story that we get here -even though this is book 2 in the Snake Eyes Series, they are not connected per say. You do not have to read book 1 to understand but you will love book 1. I cant wait for book 3 in this series.

This is a dynamic continuous story of the Snake Eyes assassins. �This is the story of Lucy Vaughn and Dante Hart.�In this follow up story, you will be exposed to renewal, reunited, reawakened, betrayal�and great creation of love which are key components in this story.�You never see what's coming in this story, and when all is revealed, it is done with perfect writing �by an author that's getting better and better the more she writes! Dante is a hitman for the Snake Eyes group and was undercover within the Zappia mafia family seeking the whereabouts of a copied master file of the Snake Eyes operation and names. He was assigned to kill Lucy father for gambling debt he owed the Zappia family and from that everything went to he**.�The writing is rich and intelligent, and the characters are well developed without being overdone.�I simply loved it! I loved everything about it. I loved the main character (Lucy with her smart mouth, hotheaded temper) and Dante!!!�This �book is another emotional journey and I swear I just sat there thinking can poor Lucy catch a break? Oops, enough been said I don't want to ruin it for others so reach out and get this amazing book worth reading and I'm looking for the next one.....

Details of a very positive future

Chet Snow's book is based on research he did as a graduate student, so it is interesting and historical. His early 80s views of future events were of the most likely probability in the 90s, so we can see that the earth changes have been delayed, not eliminated. Future glimpses of a world that has graduated to the 1st grade and emphasizes compassionate spirituality are certainly welcome and overdue.

I recommend you read this book and ignore the ramblings of anti-anything reviewers.

Lacking personal accounts

This book is about the future life “regressions” done by Helen Wambach and Chet Snow. Some of the information is interesting, but I was hoping for more personal accounts of the future (sort of similar to Michael Newton's book on past life regressions Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives). But because these regressions were done on mass audiences and not in a one to one manner, there isn't that much detailed information. After a while, the chapters that focused solely on these regressions became tedious and repetitive to follow. I found myself liking the other chapters better.
