An easy way to update your strategy knowledge

The book presents an excellent companion of the top issues involving strategy today. The book is structured according to global themes, like strategy and economics, strategy and leadership, and so on. Each chapter has 4 or 5 articles related, written by authors from important business schools. Issues like game theory and commitments are deeply reviewed, but in a simple way, easy to understand, thus allowing anyone with no MBA to understand it. The book offers an easy way to update your strategy knowledge, if your are interested in business strategy.

Editors at Financial Times (FT) co-authored this volume, with Tim Dickson serving as executive editor . It offers "The Complete MBA Companion in Strategy," the result of FT's strategic alliance with the University of Chicago Business School, INSEAD, the University of Michigan Business School, and the Said Business School at Oxford University. This is the seventh volume in what is identified as "The Financial Times Mastering" series. It contains articles that first appeared in FT in late-1999.
The material is carefully organized within 16 chapters. In the first, there are two essays: "Strategy and the delusion of Grand Designs" authored by John Kay, Director of london Economics; the second -- "Strategy, blind men and the elephant" was co-authored by Henry Mintzberg of McGill University and INSEAD, Bruce Ahlstrand of Trent University (Ontario), and Joseph Lampel of the University of Nottingham Business School.
As for the final chapter, "Fresh Challenges for the Future," it was written by Dan Schendel, founding and current editor the Strategic Management Journal. The reader is advised that "This final module sums up the main themes of the book, addresses some of the current controversies, and offers pointers on how the field may develop in coming years. The core message is that those who fail to keep up with the best in strategic management risk losing their businesses and losing their jobs. The cases of failure cited throughout the book underline the point." My own crystal ball imploded long ago so I now cut Schendel considerable slack, given the fact that his comments on "fresh challenges" were composed five years ago. In fact, I think his analysis holds up remarkably well.
Although exceptionally well-written and skillfully-edited, this volume is by no means an "easy read." My own opinion is that it will be of greatest interest and benefit to the more capable students enrolled in graduate schools of business, and, to senior-level executives. Of course, the immediate value of each chapter will be largely determined by the immediate needs and interests of each reader. I would be remiss if I failed to acknowledge the superb graphics provided by Graham Parish. I also want to commend, again, Tim Dickson and his associates -- notably Ken Pottinger, James Pickford, Laura Scanga, and various school "co-ordinators" -- for pulling together so much excellent material, then getting it all properly presented. Bravo!

I strongly recommend this book to those people interested in building a thorough understanding of strategy.

The Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum is a national advocacy organization dedicated to promoting policy, program, and research efforts for improving the health status of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. This book was stimulated by the ideas and efforts of the Forum's National Research Advisory Council (NRAC). First convened in April 1989, the NRAC was formed in response to the poor quality of data, the paucity of health statistics, and the limited epidemiological and health services research on Asian and Pacific Islander Americans. With partial support from the Federal Office of Minority Health, the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum selected three editors noted for their contributions and past compilations of scholarly work. The Forum also commissioned contributors with demonstrated experience and commitment to advancing the understanding of Asian and Pacific Islander American health in the service, research, and policy sectors. This book is a milestone effort reflecting the Forum's commitment to (a) community-based research; (b) building linkages and collaborations between academic researchers, service providers, and policy-makers; (c) advocating for institutional sanctions on improving data sources and research on Asian and Pacific Islander Americans; and (d) the dissemination of relevant information to diverse communities nationwide.

Quantum explaned in different language

It is rather quantics, study of matter called "quantic' that shows wave and particle behavior exclusively.Authors introduce new definitions such as Quantics or Phonon not photon. Methodology is quite new. Authors use a lot of "from this it follows" kind of statements so if you are not comfortable with that kind of short cuts, this book is not for you. Examples are numerous from very different areas but some of them beyond introductory level of Quantum Physics. It will help if you finish the book and come back to read the examples. there are good number of problems at the end of each chapter. Overall I like it because it has a different twist in it. Same story told from a different angle. Mathematical formalism in the average.
For me this is not an introductory book into quantum Mechanics, I prefer Reznicks book but i would not miss to read this book either.

different point of view

By all means Levy-Leblond and Ms. Balibar has made a great job. They say that Levy-Leblond is one of those guys still quoting Althusser here and there,(you can smell this from is papers as well) probably he has a pocket size Das Kapital too. But is this book a manifesto? No! Is it an introduction? Well, may be this would not help immediately to get good grades in an American college. but hey, if you want to live your life being dependent on Schaums series quantum mechanics book, Schaums may work very well for the test. but what are you gonna do after the school without a vision? Still this book is better than Gasiorowicz book as an introduction. I have been awaiting for the next two volumes to be published since I read this book in 1997, I am still waiting, I started to think that Levy-Leblond is dead by now, this might be the reason for why the other volumes did not appear at all.

It has an excellent introductory volume on the dimensional analysis which applies to the quantics. Yes he has a terminology of his own too, which is well justified. The style is like Feynmans Lectures on Physics, you do not need to use paper and pen. It is, just like Feynmans book, a good read before bed, not disturbing, yet provoking and challenging ideas. May make your dreams look more physical and fantastic too.I can recommend this book to any body who really wants to start enjoying physics at the quantics level. Drawbacks are as I said, does not help in the short term if you have a few days for the final. But why not read it on the beach? This book as well as Liboffs quantum mechanics book is tested on the beach and approved for a good read by me. One wants to associate quantum mechanics with good memories.

Smart, humane, and USEFUL social science

Prof. Schalet's book may be the most useful scholarly work ever written about adolescent sexuality. Her comparison of how parents and society deal with teens and sex in Holland and the United States is all the more significant since both societies have been strongly influenced by Calvinist Protestantism and both cultures prize social equality, individuality, and autonomy.

As Schalet explains, Dutch society has developed a template for "normal" and healthy adolescent sexual development that fosters emotionally committed relationships under parents' and adults' watchful gaze. Although she is scrupulously fair in admitting its imperfections, Schalet shows that this template leads to clearly superior health outcomes, since Dutch teens have much lower rates of unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and abortions than do American teens. By contrast, American teenage sexuality is a battleground pitting girls against boys, parents against children, and ungovernable adolescent peer groups against ineffectually authoritarian adult laws and norms. Few of the participants on the American scene seem particularly happy with the way things are. This is where Amy Schalet's book is so valuable: she shows that things could be otherwise.

As a piece of scholarship, this book is of sterling quality: it recognizes and respects the cultural and institutional forces at work in each country's approach to adolescent sexuality. Schalet demonstrates that culture shapes behavior and experience powerfully, but that cultural change is also possible: the Dutch approach to sexuality is a recent, post-1960s innovation.

The American parents, health professionals, educators, and even teens who will benefit most from this book are those with socially liberal impulses who feel that there must be a better way, but are not entirely sure what a realistic alternative to the status quo might be. For these people, Schalet shows a way forward that is neither the current prohibitionist culture nor a completely permissive libertarian mirror image of the status quo. Her book holds out the possibility of a more humane, mutually respectful, and healthy adolescent experience of sexuality.

Staunch social conservatives who read this book will probably come away unconvinced, believing that American adolescents are somehow intrinsically less self-disciplined than their European counterparts. (How is it that "socialism" teaches self-control so effectively?) Or they may believe that making teens "pay for their sins" is morally or religiously appropriate.

But for American readers who want a more compassionate--and demonstrably effective--approach to helping adolescents learn about love and sex, Schalet's book is indispensable. The more widely this book is read, the better the prospects for improving our children's lives, home by home and community by community.

Very academic

I was looking for a more secular discussion of different cultural approaches to this issue, because I have a soon to be teenager. I am a well educated white middle class mother, living in New York City. I do not really cleave to any religious dogma, and I liked the concept that teen sexuality should be normalized, but I was annoyed that the author kept characterizing the American approach as "dramatizing" it with such phrases as "raging hormones". It had not really occurred to me that I would forbid my son to have his girlfriend overnight, but this book did bring up some interesting aspects of this possibility that I had not considered. For this, I found the book informative. However, it was very academic. As a former almost academic, to me that means that the arguement is presented and re-presented repetitively. I know that this is part of the academic structure, and so when I figured that out, I got what I needed to out of the book, skipped to the conclusion and felt satisfied. Other less lazy or more engaged readers / parents may want to slog through the arguement in it's entirety, but I did not feel the need to do so.

Provides a much needed cross cultural comparison and another way to think about teen sexuality

What a smart book and an excellent topic. My teenager started to describe the hook-up culture at her high school. I wanted some resources to think more about how to talk to her, figure out to articulate my gut instincts and just get a broader range of thoughts about teenage sexuality. Though academic, this is not a difficult read and viewing teenage sexuality and parent/teen relationships as they are approached cross-culturally is enlightening. I am 125 pages in now and, reading this book along with 'Girls and Sex', by husband an I feel like we are ready for the next round of conversations with our 15 and 17 year olds. We lean more towards the approach taken by many of the Dutch parents but it would be wonderful if people not inclined to thinking about another way to view teen sexuality would be open enough to read and consider.
