In 1980, his text Double Yoga introduced his innovation of partner yoga, now practiced worldwide. With his wife, Tracey Rich, he co-created Total Yoga–The Flow Series videos, which are international #1 best sellers with sales of over 1.8 million copies.
White brings a broad, modern perspective to the teachings of yoga. He and his wife currently direct the renowned White Lotus Foundation and lecture and teach internationally.

Refreshing and useful!
By Studio T
For yoga instructors and other enthusiasts, this is a refreshing way to look at the ways yoga practice can enhance your life. It is not a how-to manual, and it is not full of esoteric Hindi terminology or philosophy nor is it full of wacky or out-of-date American views on health and fitness that some yoga books still offer. There is, to be sure, some yoga history and other relevant material to provide context, but at its essence it is, very simply, one American yogi's wise insights and practical suggestions about attitude, perspective, and life, based on his years of experience as a practitioner, a teacher, and studio owner.
The idea of yoga "beyond belief" appeals to me because it frees one from feeling like they have to subscribe to an instructor's or studio's dogma or system of thought in order to benefit from yoga. Yoga is not some "club" and it shouldn't be, ever. The author discusses the many ways that a person's approach to yoga applies to their approach to many parts of their life -- from body image, to relationships, to time management, and so on. He uses clear and relatable examples, without being one bit preachy.
My one small complaint is that the author's writing is a little bit wordy, but I also realize that sometimes one turn of phrase will illuminate one reader, while the same idea resonates better with someone else, but only if it is phrased differently. (Also: I think the book does not need a celebrity endorsement from Sting nor from anyone else -- it is very good all on its own.) In any event, I highly recommend this book if you feel that whatever yoga you practice feels shallow or pointless or is starting to feel stale. This book reads like a pep talk from a practical and understanding coach.

The 'missing' link in my yoga practice.....
By Silver Twist
I have many yoga books which I have read in the 4 years I have been doing yoga. I have benefitted much from some and only a little from others. I also have MANY dvds to help me practice my yoga (as I do not have access to a yoga teacher). Realizing that I was now an 'advanced beginner' in yoga, I began searching for dvds to help my practice advance to the next level. One of my purchases was Ganga White's Flow series. It seemed only reasonable to get his book also. I was in for an unexpected present!
I have also been doing Qigong for about 18 months and was wondering if yoga operated on energy flow also. It seemed reasonable to assume it would but I could not figure out how to draw upon and utilize it. I was also wondering how I could develop a personalized yoga practice..one that would meet my unique needs (senior citizen with Pulmonary Fibrosis). This book addressed both of my personal questions.
Mr. White explained yoga from a totally unique and personal perspective. As he did so, I suddenly understood that yoga 'flow' sequences promote the flow of prana (qi) through the body. I also began to understand how to gradually develop my own program. When about 1/2 through the book, I decided to experiment. I simply stood up. Naturally, as usual, I was stiff from sitting and reading. I did a forward bend only till my hands touched my knees and then did a jacknife with my hands on my knees. I repeated a flow between these two asanas until my muscles were no longer stiff. Then I began doing the 1/2 sun salutation until this was easy. I continued 'developing' the remainder of sun salutation A until each portion felt good. Then I stopped. I felt wonderful. The whole program had taken about 15 minutes. I had done mini-flows, felt energy flow, and was able to stand up (from my knees) with ease. I also did some modified back/forward bends (on my knees) until I could do a camel asana with ease several times....feeling my WHOLE chest expand....a real accomplishment with PF!
With the understandings gained from this book, I have a much better understanding of how to meet my unique health needs. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to make yoga more than just a cardio/aerobic/exercise program. I cannot thank Mr White enough for taking the time to share what he has learned!

A memoir as well as a how to book
By Kumarido
I loved this book. Not only could I relate to the author, he writes in an engaging style. If you are a yoga teacher or aficionado this is an interesting read. If you are looking for a straight how-to-do yoga book, this is NOT that kind of book.
Mr. White has been on the American scene of yoga from early on - and originally he was more closely affiliated with the Indian born swami/guru types. I can whole heartedly appreciate Mr. White's growing skepticism of some traditional practices. He recognized that what works on a secluded ashram may not translate to life in Southern California where people pop into a studio for a class. I'll give you a specific example of what I am talking about: the need for warm up exercises. Maybe warmups are less important in a controlled environment like an ashram where everyone is working out daily and eating good food. But in real life here? You need them. So warm up exercises, appropriate ones had to be invented.
It's an interesting history of yoga from the 60's 'til now. Mr. White is pretty diplomatic about how he expresses himself. It's not a slam book like William J Broad's "How Yoga Wrecks Your Body" this is a memoir as well as a how to. How to what? How to broaden your practice beyond the physical asana.
If you're ready to take your yoga practice beyond the mat this is a jumping off place.
