I love this book

This week I got a new book from the River Cottage series entitled "Booze Handbook" by John Wright. I was so impressed with the first book I found - "Curing and Smoking Handbook", that I wanted to read more books by this same author in the same series, and I have found this one.

I love this book! It gives me an insight into the process of making various types of alcoholic products that I would never be able to do on my own without some guidelines. John Wright is great at describing all the details of the process, and gives you a great overview of what you would need to get started with making alcohol.

One of the questions that came up when reading this book was that the author makes a lot of infusions with vodka. The question we got was - well, why not explain how to actually make vodka. I was able to find the answer in the book. The author is from Britain, and apparently it is illegal in Britain to make your own vodka or brandy. I guess it is illegal in other countries as well, I have never really thought about it. I am not much of a booze person, or a person who would know this sort of thing. But it just made me think why would you, as a homesteader, be buying vodka, to just make an infusion. You will be forever dependent on the store. I know though that making vodka is not an easy process at all, and I don't think I myself would ever want to attempt anything like that.

Infusions have become very popular, but even as a child I often saw grown-ups drinking home made infusions, and everyone seemed to have really loved those.

Basically, if you have a garden with an overflow of fruits of some type, you will want to preserve them, but just making jams might be only one avenue of using your harvest up.

John Wright gives great recipes for infusions, as well as wine, and beer. My parents made cherry wine before, and I never got a recipe of how to do that from them. Well, now I can do this myself using this lovely book. IF only I had an unlimited supply of cherries. I will hold on to this book until we actually have a farm, and an overflow of fruits to use up. For now, I hardly have enough extras for even small amounts of jam or drying. We eat fruit raw and fresh mostly.

I would recommend this book as it has a ton of recipes with very familiar plants and fruits, so the ideas are great in the book, and worth trying them out.

A Collection of Delectable Beverages

Just about anything in this world can be transformed into a delicious alcoholic beverage, if you know what you're doing. That is precisely the message of John Wright's new River Cottage Booze Handbook. As the title suggestively implies, the booze culture of Wright's world is more akin to Hobbits in hobbit-holes or Redwallian friar mice in forest abbeys. His passion is for the forageable fruits, nuts, berries, leaves, and roots you can pick for yourself in the wild, and the delightful concoctions you can then make for next to nothing.

The book is a series of recipes for the most unusual and delightful drinks divided up into four categories: infusions, wine, cider, and beer. From rose hip vodka to green walnut grappa, from elder flower and gooseberry wine to blackberry cider, from puffed wheat beer to dandelion and burdock beer, it is clear that alcohol is really something of an art form for Wright. These brews are intended to stand out from the crowded shelf of normalcy.

Of course, the proof is in the pudding, and the true test here is whether these recipes are truly drinkable. Since the mint patch in my backyard is in season right now, I decided to follow Wright's recipe for Watermint Vodka (67). My variety is actually chocolate mint, but the infusion was simple to make and turned out quite well within just a couple hours. (I decided to get a little crazy, however, and add some lemon thyme leaves after a few hours. I wouldn't recommend it--the resulting flavor was close to cough syrup.)

One of my favorite parts of the book is Wright's discussion on each recipe. Sometimes he offers tips on where to find various ingredients and how to identify them in the wild, or what sort of cocktails you might make, or how to maintain the correct specific gravity when adding high water content ingredients. All the while he maintains a wonderfully dry sense of humor.

The one downside to the Booze Handbook is that Wright is English, and the book is really aimed at the UK. Though the edition I am reviewing here is the US edition, there are plenty of terms that Wright uses that are unfamiliar to me as an American reader. This gets most problematic when certain ingredients don't even grow (natively) in the US, such as Alexanders. One might expect that in a US edition of a book like this, substitutions would have been made.

Notwithstanding, this book is a pleasing collection of recipes, many of which I intend to try soon. The hardcover edition is gorgeous, with innumerable high quality photographs, thick paper, and a rugged binding. I would recommend it if you enjoy crafting your own beverages from raw ingredients and you're comfortable with the necessity of figuring out substitutions for UK-native ingredients.

Clever, simple, and highly "spirit" fun

This small but mighty book is an at home DIY explorers dream! The book size is compact with a sturdy construction and vivid front photograph that speaks to the home chef and possible mad scientist in some of us.
The layout of the book is really helpful for those who haven't tried their hand at these types of recipes or techniques previously. There are clear and easy to understand guidelines and useful noters for the various styles of boozy fun, such as infusions and cider. Although the entire process is new for me, I found myself very confident and excited to add this additional option to some of my entertaining and meals.
Included in the informational section is a glossary of essential terms (very helpful!!) and principles of making the artistic and delicious concoctions like fermentation and record keeping.
Infusion recipes and details are listed for creative and tasty options such as elderberry vodka and rose petal vodka, these amongst others are going to perfect for the summer parties being planned already. Another section highlighting cider making is spectacular, clear, and inspirational. The directions really make it approachable,
In a day when the craft brew, artisan bar tending, and urban gardening culture are all intersecting this book is a must have to add that additional note of playful yet intelligence selections to the table.

About the Author
Len Lichtblau, a native of New York City, received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1981 at the University of Minnesota. He is currently a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Lichtblau has taught pharmacology and physiology to a wide range of health care professionals including, nursing, pharmacy, medical, dental, public health and veterinary students for over three decades. He is a consultant to the Board of Medical Practice in the state of Minnesota on prescription drug abuse and on drugs acting on the nervous system. Dr. Lichtblau is a pioneer in the field of online health care education.

Great Study Guide

Dr. Lictblau's book is an answer to my prayers! As a recent graduate of an MSN program for psychiatric advanced practice nurses I needed something to help me study for the boards. I have always been intimidated by neurobiology and thought "how am I ever going to learn this stuff?" Well I found that I learned about the brain, the neurotransmitters, the dopamine pathways, the CYP 450 system, the different mental disorders, the meds and was able to "put it all together" as the good Doctor likes to say in his book. I am very confident now, that I will pass. Thank you Dr. Lictblau for this valuable resource. I recommend it highly for anyone that needs to understand neurobiology and must prove that knowledge.

This book cuts straight thru the work of Stahl and others to offer understandable language that links neurotransmitters and psychopharmacology in understanding treatment for patients. I highly reccomend this book to anyone trying to wrap their arms around the vast subject of psychopharmacology. I can only hope the author will take up the equal challenge to present the CYP 450 system in equally understandable language.

Very good book choice

This is a great review text - it goes over anatomy and physiology, brain structure and neurotransmitter pathways, covers major disorders and their treatment, and gives a nice summary of most drugs and how they work. It's a thin, fairly brief book, so it wouldn't be enough alone, but it's a great supplement to a more in-depth textbook. I will continue to keep it in my office as a quick reference.

Cogent, inspiring, lucid, mellifluous, scholarly

Cogent, inspiring, lucid, mellifluous, scholarly: these are adjectives which describe my reading of Dr. Glenn Siniscalchi’s effort to restore apologetics to its proper place in Catholic life.

Siniscalchi’s book is wonderfully succinct, the 274 easy-to-read pages covering major aspects of Thomistic thought on belief in God, the significant contribution which Christianity brought to a pagan world (that every human life is worthy of respect), the importance of using one’s intellect to affirm faith, and the rationality of belief in a benevolent God Who wishes not only to communicate with His creatures, but also to offer them eternal life.

Thoroughly footnoted with a twelve-page bibliography to encourage further reading, Siniscalchi’s book is scholarly yet designed for popular reading, as the divisions into five parts and fifteen chapters suggest. Thus, the book is a one-stop course in a variety of disciplines. The cultural significance of Catholic Christianity—specifically of the crucial role that Catholic institutions such as charities, hospitals, and universities have played over the past two millennia—is simply inspiring and makes one proud to be part of a universal faith based, not on terror or pessimism, but love and hope.

Catholic Christians of any rite (Byzantine, Melkite, Maronite, Roman, etc.) have always appreciated the inherent beauty of the faith. What impresses the reader on finishing Siniscalchi’s book is how logical the Catholic faith is. Siniscalchi destroys atheist claims skillfully and with grace; after all, as he mentions several times, apologetics involves not merely pointing out another’s errors, but doing so in an appropriate and Christ-like manner.

Siniscalchi is a master of identifying logical fallacies in atheist or heterodox opinions, and he addresses those errors in thinking without engaging in ad hominem attacks. The reader can easily understand the deep philosophical ideas being presented because Siniscalchi’s style is, as affirmed above, cogent and lucid, flowing smoothly from one idea to the next (the meaning of the adjective “mellifluous”).
It is no wonder, then, that virtually every page of my copy has been marked with an annotation of something important to remember, something worthy of future discussion, or something simply interesting to investigate in the future.

Two areas in the book’s production need to be addressed. The second edition should correct some annoying typographic errors. Also, although the content of the fifteen chapters is evident from their titles, an index should be created to assist the reader in locating specific terms quickly.

These minor matters aside, I highly recommend Siniscalchi’s work for all, especially high school and college students. In fact, I can see how this book can be the basis for a series of broadcasts on EWTN, videos on YouTube, or a masterly online course (one chapter each week in a fifteen-week course). Siniscalchi should pursue these opportunities to promote his excellent work.

Don't have time to read St. Thomas Aquinas’ massive works? Can’t get to the entire body of Vatican II documents? Don’t have the energy or the eyesight to plow through the Catholic Encyclopedia? Read Siniscalchi’s book instead. A subtitle for the book could be “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About the Faith but Were Afraid to Ask.”

Important contribution to Catholic apologetic scholarship

Dr. Siniscalchi's book is an important contribution to Catholic apologetic scholarship. In Retrieving Apologetics, he argues convincingly for a post-Vatican II role for apologetics, using both papal encyclicals and the documents of the council itself. Vatican II did not obviate the need for apologetics, as some Catholics mistakenly think. Rather, Vatican II opened up new apologetic methods. The council, while breaking the monopoly of the Neo-Scholastic classical method on Catholic apologetics, nevertheless affirmed the classical method's validity in its own sphere of competence. This argument comprises the first part of Siniscalchi's book.

The rest of the book is devoted to updating that classical method to meet the challenges of today. It is here where Siniscalchi particularly shines. Before one can begin to make the case for the truth of the Catholic faith, Siniscalchi rightly argues, apologists must first defend the notion of objective truth against the claims of postmodern relativism. He then updates several Thomistic arguments for God's existence, defending them against the particular challenges of today. He corrects many of the Neo-Scholastic errors in their defense of Christianity - rather than arguing for the truth of Christianity based on an outdated notion of historical reliability of the Gospels, Siniscalchi argues that, based on the totality of the evidence (accepted as evidence by both Catholics and non-believers alike), the hypothesis that Christianity is true outstrips the claims of rival hypotheses that would see Christianity as false. Siniscalchi also develops the relevance of the Catholic faith, especially the via empirica, as a method for defending the truth of Catholicism.

Perhaps the best thing about Retrieving Apologetics, and Sinischalchi's work as a whole, is that, while his passion for the subject is evident, he is unflinchingly fair and charitable. As a scholar, he embodies the Vatican II vision that sees ecumenical dialogue and apologetics as not incompatible. As Siniscalchi himself points out, authentic dialogue requires its participants to seek the truth, not gloss over differences.
