HEAVILY RESEARCHED

With the Homosexual agenda gaining momentum and taking hold around the world it is important for Christians to familiarize themselves with what the Bible says (and doesn't say) about Homosexuality.

In this book, Robert Gagnon takes the Biblical stance that homosexuality is clearly a sin. His book is divided into several parts, going in a logical, chronological order, starting with the Old Testament and ancient Near-Eastern culture, Judaism, the teachings of Jesus, the teachings of Paul and finally, a look at some scientific research in regards to the subject.

At 493 pages this is certainly not light reading--especially considering the copious amounts of footnotes--but it is definitely very heavily researched, citing sources from many ancient cultures, philosophers, historians and religious texts.

Also of note, I noticed that Gagnon is wary of avoiding sweeping generalizations (words like "all", "always", "everyone", etc)--a trait to be desired in objective research that is sometimes lacking. While he largely disagrees with those taking a pro-gay stance, to his credit he makes it known when they have said something that he entirely or at least partially agrees with.

The main question remains: Does Gagnon make a strong case for saying that the Bible is against homosexuality? I would have to say that he does. In addition to his arguments, there are some things I would have pointed out from my studies in the various world religions. For example, Zoroastrianism also speaks against homosexuality as evident in the following passage of the Zend-Avesta.

"Ahura Mazda answered: 'The man that lies with mankind as man lies with womankind, is the man that is a Daeva [demon] . . ." The Zend-Avesta, Fargard VIII, V, 32.

Hinduism affirms that sexual intercourse is to be between a man and a woman in the Upanishads. Bear in mind that India is about 2500 miles away from most of the events in the Bible.

"Prajapati then thought to himself: 'Now, why don't I prepare a base for that semen?' So he created woman and, after creating her, had intercourse with her. A man, therefore, should have intercourse with a woman." The Brhadaranyaka Upanishad 6.4.2

Such passages just go to show that it was not just Judaism that was against homosexuality. The Israelites were not the "odd ones out" in affirming that sex is understood to be between a man and a woman.

As for why I gave this book four stars instead of five: I almost never give 5 stars and in the case of this book I did find some things to be desired.

1) There is an index, but not in the traditional sense. It simply lists an index of authors and works. Having both would have been preferable instead of having to skim through nearly 500 pages dense with footnotes and citations. It is for this reason that I don't cite any passages from this book in my review.

2) At one point he mentions the massive health costs to society as a result of allowing homosexuality to thrive. While this was an enticing argument, he gave no sources for that particular claim.

3) There were times where Gagnon went into other territory: head-coverings, divorce, adultery, etc. While there is nothing wrong with this per se, I felt that sometimes he dwelt too long on these tangential topics, almost to the point where I had forgotten as to why he even bothered to bring these up in the first place.

4) Finally, it's just a humorous nitpicking, but if you took a shot of alcohol for every time he used a phrase along the lines of "male-female complementarity" you would be very drunk indeed--if not dead.

OVERALL: While I didn't find this book to be the definitive book on the Bible's stance on Homosexuality, Gagnon comes awfully close, making strong arguments backed by a substantial amount of resources. More importantly, I am glad to see that he ultimately emphasizes (as Jesus Himself would have) that we should "hate the sin, but love the sinner."

This is a clear and concise presentation of what the bible has to say about homosexuality. It also tears down all the "so called" exegetical arguments against the Church's traditional view of the sin of homosexuality. A must read for those who want to be on the biblical side of this debate.

The Bible and Homosexual Practice is an extraordinary book that anyone who has serious intent to understand what the Bible texts affirm about this subject must read. The comprehensiveness, scholarship and dialogue Gagnon engages in with those who disagree with him and propose very different interpretations of biblical texts is almost worth the cost of the book itself. Not only does he ably present and argue for the case for his own interpretation of the key texts in question but he fairly represents that of those who disagree with him and then effectively answers them. All this is done with respect, thorough scholarship and crisp and clear writing. This book is accessible for the non-scholar. I would especially recommend that those who think that Scripture can be (or should) interpreted to allow for homosexual practice read this book. A careful read may not change such persons minds on the issue but it will challenge them to seriously consider the traditional Jewish and Christian interpretation of these texts regarding sexual practices.

What is "Anime"?

Stevie Suan contends that "Anime" share a particular aesthetic. And that's because he uses "Anime to mean (Japanese) animation with this particular aesthetic, generally regarded in Japan as 'nihon no anime,' with the word 'anime' itself connoting animation in general." (p. 323 and, slightly briefer, p. 20) He then proceeds to find parallels between Japanese theater and his "Anime", further narrowed down to a sample - which is neither representative nor random - from the "Action, Adventure, Science Fiction, Fantasy genres" (p. 21) from 1995 to 2010. (Quite a lot of "Evangelion" and, strangely, "Azumanga Daioh", but no "One Piece" or "Pok�mon", for example.)
In the same way, one could write a thesis that "Anime" is based on Western literature, simply by defining "Anime" as (Japanese) animation based on Western literature, and ignoring the rest. So, before you buy this pricey book, be aware that it is not about anime in general, but about a highly biased subset of Japanese animation. There are other problems with this book, as well as good or at least interesting points, but that would seem to me to be a fundamental one.

Interesting Reading... But Difficult.

This book was certainly INTERESTING... in both good and bad ways!
Throughout the book are absolute GEMS of wisdom, that are unfortunately mixed with beliefs and ideas that were just a little too esoteric for my taste! Because there was so much valuable info, I would recommend this book, but you might find it to be a very difficult read overall.
Starting with chapter one, the book stresses that you must accept the fact that you are "worthy" of success. It starts out just fine... and rather inspirational, but by chapter two we are being exposed to the "voilet flame" and "the goddess of supply named Fortuna".
Chapter three again becomes motivating with it's emphasis on faith and the idea that worry will keep prosperity away. This chapter is excellent and also stresses the need to realize that God is the doer... not us, that we must relinquish our control. It also talks about the need for constancy and perseverance. "Faith must be planted in the soil of gratitude". Above all, you should always keep moving toward your goals and toward your fears.
Unfortunately... chapter four gets into more "unusual" concepts with the introduction of the four lower bodies, the three upper bodies, the body elemental and the seven rays. Chapter five continues along the same lines with the "great divine director's novena".
Chapter six has a wonderful gem... "God is where I AM: All that seperates me from God is my failure to acknowledge that there is a difference between God and myself." This wonderful idea and others like it is what makes this book worth it despite it's other very unusual concepts.
Chapter seven also covers the interesting concept of blessing money and things and reminds us that "we increase whatever we praise". This chapter is also excellnt in that it stresses that giving is a major secret of prosperity, "it is more blessed to give than recieve", but if you do not first recieve how can you give? Chapter Eight was also interesting about tithing... but chapter nine again went over the top with it's "healing " ideas, again emphasing the "voilet flame".
The book ends with a workbook that has many good ideas and a glossary that TRIES to make sense of the variety of esoteric terms the book uses throughout. Because this book did contain so much worthwhile info, I will probably read it a second time. This was in many ways a great book, but it was such a difficult read that I could not rate it higher nor recommend it to a reader just starting on their spirtual journey or just starting to work with abundance concepts.

About the Author
Walter Russell Crocker an Australian scholar and diplomat. He was born in 1902 and educated at the University of Adelaide, Balliol College, Oxford and Stanford University. From 1952 to 1970 Sir Walter served Australia with distinction for eighteen years as ambassador in a variety of countries including India (1952-1955 and 1958-1962), Indonesia, Canada, Nepal, Belgium and The Netherlands, Kenya, Ethiopia and Uganda and Italy. Following his retirement from the diplomatic service in 1970, Sir Walter returned home to Adelaide where he served as a member of the Council of Adelaide University from 1971-1978. In 1973 he was appointed Lieutenant-governor of South Australia, a position he held until 1982. He was appointed K.B.E in 1978. Sir Walter was a prolific writer publishing numerous magazine articles, lectures and books during his career. Nehru: a contemporary estimate was published in 1966.

A Very Prescient Biography

Having seen Nehru as a youth during a school visit, I can vouch for the physical description of the freshness of complexion though only three years before his death. I was however too young to vouch for the politics of that time.
However now in my senior citizen mode, the points raised as possibilities on what India will become ring true in so many ways.
This book has added to my knowledge of a selfless great man who for all his perceived or real shortcomings was a true patriot and we were very fortunate to have him oversee the first years of our independence.

A nuanced and generous view of Nehru

Walter Crocker's book is a generous and erudite reading of Jawaharlal Nehru, as told by a diplomat who clearly had a great deal of respect for the Indian freedom fighter and Prime Minister but who was not blind to Nehru's faults and over-reaches. In an India in which Nehru is trashed by far lesser people, this book is a indeed a welcome view of one of the giants of 20th century politics.

Biography needn't be hagiography. Nor are over-cynical, nit-picky biographies of particular interest to any reader. Instead, a reader wants to get a nuanced-yet-whole view of the subject; Crocker does a wonderful job and in the process shows his own remarkable understanding of India (his propensity to make grand predictions is welcome as is the uncanny prescience with which he does them.)

Nehru has been seized by revisionists and revanchists in India and books like this are necessary antidotes to the tide of negativity surrounding Jawaharlal.

Posavac is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Loyola University of Chicago where he served as director of the Applied Social Psychology Graduate Program and chairman of the Psychology Department. About the Author
Yes, I am a Nicaraguan resident. I started the process in November, 2013 by going to the immigration office. After seeing the wall of requirements I went to a lawyer. He agreed to help me for $500, then dropped my case to take on a higher-paying gig. So what I did was to tough it out, starting at the top and working my way down the requirements list until I had everything. Some things weren’t correct and I had to do them over. Some things were required and then weren’t. Still other documents were needed last-minute and then there were the fees. And signatures. And translations. And then my dog got ahold of my papers and, well, that dog now has a new home. Helping people is what I love doing. My day job is building schools in rural Nicaragua. For five years before that I was bringing light and clean water to communities in this country. I love Nicaragua and I love showing people what this country has to offer. And if you love this country enough to consider becoming a resident then I would love to get to know you. I live here. In Managua, actually. My home is the same one that my wife has been living in since she was born. Our kids go to school here. My Spanish has gotten pretty good even though I still have trouble understanding country accents. I love it so much that I convinced my mother, a home-grown little-city girl from Southeast Texas to move to Granada.

Required Reading for all Residency Seekers in Nicaragua

Wow, this is everything I was expecting and way more. The information in here is very comprehensive and it has already saved me headaches at the immigration office.

The only complaint is that the book is a bit big to fit in my small pack. It would be easier to carry around if it were smaller and fatter to get all of the info in. And there is a LOT of info!

If you are thinking of getting residency in Nicaragua, this book is a MUST HAVE.

There are plenty of self-improvement and career-advice books available, however, you'll find few targeted to the engineer profession. This book fixes that shortfall and does it superbly.

A Handy Career Guide for Young Engineers

I just finished reading the book and was very impressed. The author managed to put together the very essentials for a successful engineering career. Having been practicing as a Civil Engineer for just over eight years, I can see some of the lessons I learned through setbacks and frustrations clearly explained in the book. I do wish I had this book at the very beginning of my career-it could have saved me some time. However, I am still glad I got the book. It not only illustrates many important principles that I just start to get a sense of, but also organizes them in such a logical way that I believe is especially appealing to most engineers. Still early in my career, I can't say for the more experienced group how this book will benefit them. But this is a chart for younger engineers who aspire to explore the ocean of opportunities and find their dream land. I am definitely recommending this book to my friends and colleagues.

You Don't Have to Be An Engineer to Benefit From This Book

Don't let the title fool you! You might believe you need to be an engineer to read and benefit from this book but nothing could be further from the truth. The author, Anthony Fasano, was first trained as an engineer but early in his career he noticed that his skill as an engineer was not the only criteria used to measure his success.

He realized that the non-technical skills such as how to find a good mentor, how to be an effective leader, goal setting skills, organizational skills, how to become an effective communicator and learning how to network were also very important to his success and these topics were not covered in most engineering colleges.

Anthony discovered that the more he concentrated on developing these soft skills the faster his corporate career advanced.

Helping his fellow engineers excel in these skills became a passion for Anthony so he invested the time into becoming a business coach as well as an engineer. This book may have been original written to help only engineers advance up the corporate ladder but I believe that the tips, tools and strategies discussed in this book would work equally well for most technically focused professional such as architects or accountants.

But during the harsh light of day, Noah has a change of heart. Not about the fact he likes Natalie—a lot. He’s not sure he wants to drag this sweet lady through his sordid life. Even though sparing her could cost them both a chance at forever.

Warning: Contains a nurse who thought she knew all there was to know about anatomy, and a rock god who’s about to show her a few spots she missed. To say they both hit the jackpot would be an understatement.

Good Reading

Natalie wasn’t a one-night-stand kind of gal. But with both her friends otherwise occupied, and hell, they were in Vegas, she decides that spending a few hours with a hot guy is practically mandatory. Deciding to give it a whirl, Natalie is shocked literally speechless when she meets Noah Wilde. The rockstar with the tattoos, leather vest and growly voice. He’s everything she never expected but, for one night in Vegas, Natalie is determined. With Noah by her side and in her bed, she knows she’s in for one seriously wilde night.

This is a gloriously fun “one night in Vegas” style story. I really enjoyed both Natalie and Noah’s characters and found myself drawn in to them both almost immediately. I was a little nervous when I found out how inexperienced Natalie was – all too often “almost virgin” heroines turn annoying and clich�d to my mind – but Ms Erickson did an amazing job with Natalie. I felt she was really well balanced and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the delectable night of passion she shared with Noah.

While the plot itself stuck to the fairly routine formula of a girl’s weekend getting disbanded for hot, sexy flings in Vegas, I enjoyed Natalie and Noah’s characters and interactions enough that I could look past the fact there were no real surprises here for me. I love Vegas stories though, and have to admit this fun read will be just as good upon second – or even third – reading, which is always a positive thing for any book in my mind.

A fun frolic of a story with interesting characters I found myself engaged in. While there shouldn’t be any surprises in the storyline itself, I’d recommend this for any readers wanting a bit of heat and spice in their romance and looking for a fun way to pass the weekend.

Short and sexy

A girls night only in Vegas sounds like the perfect chance to blow off some steam for Natalie. As a nurse she doesn’t have much time for a personal life, but after her two friends ditch her for two sexy as sin celebrities, Natalie is left feeling lonely, unsure and ready to call it a night but a chance accident has Natalie spilling her drink all over the lead singer of rock band Wilde & Wicked.

Noah Wilde shouldn’t have been amused by the woman who spilled her drink all over him. He’s used to having any woman he wants but something about Natalie calls to him. It isn’t easy tempting Natalie to let go and have a no strings attached night but once Natalie says “yes,” Noah finds himself in over his head and unsure of whether or not he wants to let her go.

Wild Nights takes place within a couple of days, not a whole lot of time for a couple to get to know one another, especially when they both start off with a one night stand in mind. For such a short timeline author Karen Erickson made sure her main characters, Noah and Natalie had a chance to form a connection that would make them want to spend more time together even when their one night was over. Noah and Natalie’s romance wasn’t without its angst and mild conflicts however. Noah’s celebrity lifestyle was the complete opposite of Natalie’s low key existence as a nurse. The two of them had to first want to be with each other bad enough to begin the next step in their whirlwind romance. Not an easy feat to accomplish with such a short amount of time but Erickson managed without losing my interest.

As a whole, Wild Nights was a sexy, uncomplicated read that I enjoyed. It’s one of those stories that you can squeeze in between busy days.

Final Verdict: Apparently I missed a prequel. I must fix this ASAP.

Hot Sexy Short with Rock Star and a Nurse (B Grade)

Karen Erickson is a pro at writing hot to trot, steaming one night stands that becomes much more, which is the case of the Vegas Nights series. Wild Nights is the final novella in the trilogy about 3 nurses who live it up in Vegas, and up finding their Prince Charming’s, all of whom are celebrities in sports, acting and rock-n-roll.

Wild Nights is Natalie’s story. She is very much a duck out of water type of woman, who prefers to stay home and isn’t into the social scene. She also has a bit of a self-esteem problem. When her two girl friends go off with their hot studs and leave her at a party, she’s upset, and rightly so. She feels they dumped her to get their freak on with their hot men. But things are on the up and up for Natalie when Noah Wilde, a hot rock star notices her. Noah has toned down his partying. He went to rehab for drinking too much, and isn’t really into the partying scene any more like Natalie. But then he spots her and wants to hang out with her. These two hit it off together and he shows her the sights of Vegas. Noah is such a sweet guy to Natalie, that she takes a big chance with him, and goes to his hotel room. There Noah gives her a hotter than hot night to remember. The sex between these two are smoking hot (some of the best of the trilogy). Natalie and Noah stay together the entire weekend, but then she overhears Noah talking on the phone. He mentions her in a certain way that makes Natalie think her weekend love fest with Noah was the worst mistake of her life.

Wild Nights is a perfect example of what a romance novella should be. Karen has such great skill at making the chemistry between the hero and heroine work. The one downside is, because this is a novella, the ending is rushed in order to get to the HEA in the word count allotted. Like the other two books prior, I felt each book would have been much better if they were longer. That’s the case here with Wild Nights. The miscommunication between Natalie and Noah happens, and then the fix is quick and fast, which is off the page. I wanted to see these two resolve their issues, and not just have it mentioned in passing.

But even with my annoyance at the sudden ending, Wild Nights delivered for me. A hot sexy short!

Such it is with debt which inflates the balance sheet, but, applied to excess, can impair or even cripple it, exacting much for the few, and little for the many. This is the central theme of Sebastian Canderle’s The Debt Trap, an examination of private equity deals through the prism of fourteen case studies taken from recent financial history. Perhaps they should be acts in a long running drama. Written for the MBA student, but equally suited to the laity without too much effort on the part of the latter, the author’s narrative is at once instructive and cautionary. It is a worthwhile contribution to the study of an oft touted and controversial asset class.
Canderle lets the facts and circumstances do the talking. In his estimation, the reader will need to draw her own conclusions as to the merits and demerits of the discipline. At the very least, it would seem that the truth about private equity’s intentions lies somewhere between opprobrium and encomium, though the author at times is unsparing in his criticism of the industry’s shortcomings. Private equity is as much an investment strategy as it is an asset class. As such, it is multifaceted, often subject to the whims of human emotion, something that the case studies bring out with a high degree of granularity. The book assumes knowledge of the rudiments of finance, but is not completely inaccessible to those who lack it. On the contrary, it encourages the reader to learn more. Academics and financial writers could take a page from Canderle's book...literally.
On the surface, the objective of private equity is simple. Borrow money, buy a company, manage it to be more efficient and profitable, then sell it. Repeat. While it endeavors to deliver value, it can destroy it as well. Private equity often appears to be an extractive industry, taking as much value out of the business as quickly as possible with little regard for the longer-term viability of the enterprise. A surfeit of leverage can lead to zombie companies kept alive through loan forbearance and poor regulation. Market driven regulation may be better.
Private equity claims ingenuity, yet as the book narrates in exhaustive detail, it often runs riot. Indeed, leverage often induces moral hazard with fund operators working outside the lines and just beyond regulatory remit. Solve for maximum greed as it were. At once surprising and disturbing is the all too common lack of formal training amongst fund managers who seem to learn the business on the fly. Avarice, it seems, is good or, at the very least, alive and well. In truth, malfeasance often operates with impunity. Managers exact their cut, pawns in the leverage game, CEOs and top brass get sacked. Shadow capitalism runs amok for the benefit of the few in the land of the fee.
Its nefarious reverberations on companies and the economy notwithstanding, the practice is far more nuanced as the case studies in�The Debt Trap�make clear. One would not think a�book on the arcana of balance sheets and capital structure as they relate to firm buyouts to be a particularly interesting read, yet Sebastian Canderle makes it so. The table of contents alone reads as much like a series of movie trailers as it does introductions to a complex investment process. The chapters enumerate LBO techniques, yet often appear to be as much a taxonomy of bad deeds.
The text elucidates investment legerdemain that general partners often employ to gussy up their performance and close deals. It equally informs the reader that private equity is more variegated than black and white. A primer for those not completely current on leverage,�the first chapter foretells the remainder of the book without giving the plots away. Worked examples of private equity math introduce the reader to the basics of leverage’s effect on returns. A brief lexicon is useful particularly for the uninitiated. Indeed, Canderle entices the reader, encouraging her to read on. The author's style is erudite, yet he felicitously phrases the narrative to make what could otherwise be a dry volume into an engaging read. Private equity is dynamic. Enjoy this series of financial short stories. Perhaps truth is at times stranger than fiction.

Excellent case studies

As a hedge fund manager, I am used to press criticism regarding my industry’s uneven performance. But private equity also has issues, judging from this book’s case studies.
The cases cover many companies across geographies (the US and European markets), industries (leisure, media, retail, real estate, chemicals, industrials, business services…) and transaction types (secondaries, take-privates, PE-backed IPOs, PIPEs, repurchases). I found the issue of technological disruption in the EMI scenario compelling.
Albeit quite technical in parts, the book is easy to understand. We forget how prevalent private equity has become. These investors have their hands in so many parts of the financial sector, including in credit, property and turnaround situations that we can all benefit from learning more about them. Only problem with this book is that it is pricey. I managed to get myself a cheaper copy straight from the publisher.

Makes private equity a little bit less private and much less magical

It is hard to go through this book and to feel that PE fund managers actually know what they are doing. Even though the author points out that we should not reach conclusions from just reviewing the 14 case studies he covers, I cant quite understand why regulators are not all over this industry and its major participants.

If KKR, TPG and Apollo behave that way and can get away with it, what hope is there to ever get the sector to behave ethically?

The chapter on Caesars is edifying. To call that asset-stripping is an understatement. The court proceedings are still ongoing, eighteen months after the business declared bankruptcy! No one can actually make sense of what went on during Apollo and TPGs period of ownership.

This book is a good summary of what capitalism has become: a free-for-all feast that only benefits the rich and powerful.
