I think I expected much more from this book. It did not flow, it was as if jumbled thoughts were just put down on paper.Someof the chapters were good, but the others were rather random....It was not a " WOW " factor for me. Sorry read better Autobiography's.

About the Author

Sunil Kapila, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., is Robert W. Browne Endowed Professor and Chair, Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He also serves as the Graduate Orthodontics Program Director at the University of Michigan. Dr. Kapila is the director of the Moyers Symposium, a prestigious conference held at the University of Michigan, which each year focuses on a specific topic in orthodontics, dentofacial orthopedics and craniofacial biology.

Rehash of good ideas, but not a "guide" to investing

OK, let me start out by saying that I like Robert's way of making you think. I read a few of the Rich Dad books. He changed how I look at money and wealth. I have unknowingly even been implementing much of what he preaches over the past few years and what he says does make alot of sense.

Here's my problem with this book. First of all, as with his other books he simply repeats statements and thoughts over and over. He claims it is a learning tool. I agree to a point, but after awhile it really starts to look like he's just filling in the pages to make the book longer.

Secondly, he says alot of the exact same things as the other books. no real new info here. Although if you haven't read his other books (and I suggest RDPD first) then this is a good overview.

Finally, and most importantly, my issue with Robert is that while he makes great generalized comments he never actually tells his readers what to actually do. He kinda skips around the subject. So when I saw his "Guide to investing" I expected this to be more than the same generalizations. No such luck. He still doesn't quite get into what to actually do in a step by step manner. As such this book is mistitled as a "Guide" to investing." More like Robert's general thoughts toward investing.

I can look past his somewhat remarkable ability to retain specific conversations and events from more than 45 years ago...or the way his claims are not really verifiable...or how in one book a story is slightly different than in another book...all of which makes one wonder if he made up the whole background story in order to have a theme for his books. However, I cannot keep reading his books if he doesn't start to present new, fresh ideas and specifics.

Appreciate the introduction to how people can get rich

After learning more about money I found Mr. Kiyosaki isn't the best teacher for investing. I appreciate his introducing me to the subject but prefer Dave Ramsey's plan. After seeing this guy on a late night info-mercial for buying silver I lost respect for him and can not use his advice.

If you like Robert's books you'll like this a lot. You have to understand that Robert is the mindset king. He never, EVER gives you a how-to. There are lots of those books out there. He is specifically a way of thinking book series in all of his books. His writing is plain and straightforward. If you read his original book this provides a more detailed expansion on it.

It's a textbook so it not surprising that it doesn't just absorb your attention... but it does supply important information with reasonable detail. I like that it gives charts and list to help with explanations.

This textbook has some good information, but it is wordy and redundant in spots. Some topics have more detail than what is needed in the real world. Chapters are too long. Make these edits, enlarge the print, and the textbook would be a better product.

About the Author
Chris Pine first discovered the programming language Ruby in early 2001 and immediately began using it to build tools for his day job: programming computer games. After hours, he volunteered with gifted children teaching them advanced mathematics. With Ruby, he began to teach his students programming as well. Once he saw how easily his students learned advanced programming concepts in this environment, he decided to expand his teaching materials into a book. Chris enjoys board games and juggling, and lives with his darling wife and two darling children in darling Oslo, Norway. He is very happy.

Great until chapter 8

This book was great until Chapter 8. Now it's going way too fast without enough examples. Also there are only a few practice exercises now and they start out too advanced so that you can't do them without looking at the answers. This does not inspire confidence! There should be more practice exercises at the end of the chapter, starting with easy ones and getting harder and harder.

Never thought I could program

To start out with, I have tried to learn programming before, but it never really stuck. Mostly I looked up tutorials on Youtube and poked around in forums, but it all seemed so confusing and insurmountable. I am absolutely not a math person, so I thought programming would always be beyond my reach. However, my little nerd dream of making video games took root, and so I bought this book.

Two weeks later, I made my first video game. Yes, it's a piece of crap, but it's just the beginning. This book teaches you from square one, in a way that is very approachable and friendly (and includes a ton of nerdy references to everything from video games to Buffy). So if you have never tried programming before, this is a great book to start out with.

A note that a lot of reviewers bring up is about the learning curve of the book. Yes, the later chapters cover some advanced stuff, and it can really throw you for a loop. However, you don't NEED to understand everything all at once. Having trouble understanding recursion? Just skip that section. You can come back to it later as you need it. The great thing about this book is that it is both a guide and a reference. Once you get the basics, if something seems overwhelming or unimportant, you can skip it and come back to when you need it. I would definitely recommend this book to people interested in learning to program.

And for anyone interested, you can check out a copy of the simple game I made using this book. This is a good example of the kind of stuff you will be able to do after just about 7-12 hours with the book. (Note: you will need ruby installed on your computer for it to work)[...]

It's good if you use supplementary materials!

About a year ago, I decided to pick up Learn to Program because I had very little programming experience (primarily characterized by copy-and-pasted AWK scripts and some web design via HTML/CSS)and I wanted something that would provide a truly introductory text to programming as a skill (the Ruby language is a plus). Learn to Program kind of falls short of that expectation. While the first first seven or so chapters are written well, the latter half of the book jumps the boat. The assignments were too difficult to solve without peaking at the answers and there were very few assignments at that. Although the anecdotal approach that Pine takes to develop a concept through a chapter is helpful and appreciated, the book can be improved through the addition of more examples that increase in complexity as well as more assignments. However, the experience can be improved by completing related exercises on CodeAcademy (Ruby), RubyMonk, and Ruby Koans (a bit more advanced).

Borges en Sur

Borges escribi� un gran n�mero de ensayos que, en el momento de hacer la selecci�n para su publicaci�n en libro, decidi� dejar afuera. Uno de los motivos, sin duda, es que varios de estos ensayos repiten algunas ideas que se encuentran en alg�n otro lugar en su obra. Pero con Borges siempre hay sorpresas. Resulta obvio que no escrib�a de una manera cuando lo hac�a para un libro, y de otra cuando escrib�a la lista de la lavander�a (que no es el caso de este libro, no se preocupen). Su estilo es firme y parejo, y siempre atrapante.

En su caso, volver a repasar algunas ideas siempre implica ver las cosas desde un nuevo �ngulo (por ejemplo, en este libro encontramos el ensayo sobre bibliotecas infinitas que precede a su cuento "La Biblioteca de Babel"; en otro texto encontramos las "reglas" del cuento policial, etc.). Para aquellos que ya hayan pasado por "Discusi�n", "Otras Inquisiciones", etc., y quieran curiosear un poco m�s, creo que este libro (as� como los tomos de Textos Recobrados -- sobre todo el segundo) vale la pena.

Pero dejo la cosa ac�, siguiendo el consejo: "los directores cinematogr�ficos --y los novelistas-- suelen olvidar que las muchas justificaciones (y los muchos pormenores circunstanciales) son contraproducentes. La realidad no es vaga, pero s� nuestra percepci�n general de la realidad; de ah� el peligro de justificar demasiado los actos o de inventar muchos detalles". --Borges, El delator, Borges en Sur

Delicate Balance between the Two Subjects

This book was developed for a class taught at Rice University that covered both Functional Analysis and Probablity/Statistics. It required the development of this book that gives a good introduction to functional analysis for statisticians and an introduction to statistics for functional analysts.

The book is positioned so that it can be used for both groups of students. This is a delicate balance that can teach introductions (graduate student level) to both fields without leaving the other half of the class bored. As such it is not a text on either subject, but is inbetween. The sections on statistics are written from a viewpoint familiar to the functional analyst, not from that of a mathematician. And the reverse is true in the sections on functional analysis. This is to complete the view of the two groups typically taking the class.

This is a graduate level course, it provides relatively little background information to the basic mathematics needed.
