A worthy 2nd Edition of a Systemic Coaching classic!

The 2nd Edition of "Systemic Coaching and Constellations" by John Whittington is a very important update that extends his work in bringing the ideas behind Hellinger's family constellations into the world of organizational systems. John has a beautiful way of simplifying difficult concepts, and here he provides a foundation for systemic constellations built around TIME, PLACE, and EXCHANGE.

This edition has a new chapter titled "Belonging: Conscience, guilt and innocence" which for me was worth the price of the book. Whittington illustrates how we are all born into a family system, and through our lives we demonstrate a need to belong to the systems we encounter, all of which can cause entanglements. Systemic constellations provide a way of visualizing and working through those entanglements. Whittington describes the layers of personal conscience, organizational conscience and systemic conscience -- which can work at cross-purposes to each other. The ground-breaking idea behind conscience is that innocence is what we try to maintain to belong to a system, while guilt is what we feel when we leave a system or "betray" its values. When you take the time to truly internalize the concepts here, it can completely change the way you look at, interact with, and bring change to organizational systems.

The other chapter I'd like to mention was the final chapter, "The F word: Familiar patterns." This chapter is about unlocking your own system of family origin, and for me it was a life-changer. Whittington explains a couple of techniques, that done in the right place and with an open heart, can unlock a wealth of resources and strength that can be found in one's family system. The expansion of my own heart and soul that came from these exercises has taken my coaching to a completely new and different level.

Excellent Book on Coaching

As a Certified Master Coach, I have coached for 20 years and have a number of tools in my toolbox. This is a new and exciting process for me and I believe it will deepen clients awareness of their world and how they are in it. I have already used some of the simpler approaches and it was very effective. I can see that this will take some study. I would recommend this book to any coach who is interesting in expanding their coaching capabilities.

Set in her native St. Petersburg, Russia, Simons's latest thick novel (after Tully, etc.) focuses on a WWII love affair. As the story opens, Tatiana, the youngest member of the Metanova family, is just 17; she still shares a bed with her older sister, Dasha. Not long after the country goes to war with Germany, Tatiana meets Alexander, a soldier, and sparks fly. It turns out, however, that Alexander is the same soldier Dasha has been crowing about. Possessed of a strong sense of family loyalty, and living under conditions that permit no privacy, Tatiana refuses to interfere with her sister's happiness, but the attraction between Tatiana and Alexander proves too powerful. Complicating matters, another soldier, Dimitri, has information that could destroy Alexander, and Dimitri likes Tatiana, too. In order to protect both Dasha's feelings and Alexander's life, the star-crossed lovers become part of a deceptive quadrangle as war intensifies around them. Taking her title from a tragic poem by Alexandr Pushkin, Simons skillfully highlights the ironies of the socialist utopia. Despite the novel's sprawling length and its seemingly epic scope, the nearly single-minded focus on dialogue between Tatiana and Alexander leaves other character development shortchanged and the reader with the impression of a peculiarly tiny canvas. Nave and occupying the Cinderella role in her family, Tatiana is certainly a survivor though one who finally outstays her welcome. While her love story is often both tender and fierce, it is also overwrought and prolonged past the breaking point. The Soviet Union suffered immensely at the hands of Germany during World War II, and no Russian city suffered more than Leningrad. The Germans laid siege to Leningrad in 1941, and the resulting horror and chaos gave rise to many dramatic tales of deprivation and heroism. Simons tells one of them here. Tatiana Metanov's life is typical of the way most people lived in Leningrad in the late 1930s and early 1940s: her family is crammed into a small living space, and their days consist of endlessly waiting in various lines for supplies. On the day Germany invades the Soviet Union, Tatiana meets Alexander Belov, a lieutenant in the Red Army. The story of their love takes the reader through the whole, awful span of Leningrad under siege. Unfortunately, the novel is overlong, and, at times, Simons shifts awkwardly between her fictional story and real events. But readers who persevere--those who love long novels for the sense it gives them of "living" with a book--will come to care about these characters and their plight and will take away a definite sense of what the siege of Leningrad actually meant on a personal level. Beautiful love story despite the war.

Wow. This story was compelling and complex. Simons' writing was superb. She had me right there. I loved reading about the history of the war from the Russian pov. I felt like I was in Leningrad during WWII watching Tatiana and Alexander fall in love through secrecy, through poverty, through starvation, through people trying to keep them apart. Their love was the one bright spot while their world was crumbling around them.

Tatiana was an amazing heroine. She was a slip of a girl, just seventeen years old. Yet she was strong, and generous, and clever, and brave, and always an optimist while her family was anything but. She just kicked butt all the way to the end. She's a survivor and I loved her.

Alexander is a Russian officer. He's courageous, and complicated, and hot-headed, and he loves Tatiana fiercely. But they definitely have obstacles. A major one being Dimitri. He is now up there with Joffrey Baratheon and Black Jack Randall as the most vile human beings in fiction.

My only complaint about this book is the monotony. I felt there were a number of scenes where the author droned on and on. I wanted her to move on. It could have been much shorter. Otherwise, I thought it was perfect. I'm looking forward to diving in to book two.

Disappointing

The descriptions of WWII in Russia were eye-opening for me, as I hadn't previously read anything set in Russia during the war - plenty of literature in the UK, France, Germany, and so on, but not Russia.

What I didn't like were how naive (and, ultimately, annoying) Tatiana was and how controlling Alexander became of her, especially towards the end. He controlled what she wore, what she did, who she talked to, and so on. This book was recommended to me on a feminist reading list - historical fiction novels about and/or by women - but it wasn't feminist at all, in the end. Tatiana was completely consumed by her relations with Alexander, who ended up being emotionally abusive, manipulative, and brooding. He wasn't desirable or loving at all.

Just over halfway through, the gratuitous sex - though not totally unwelcome in some literature I enjoy - detracted from the story completely. I don't want to give away story details, but I stopped reading it about 3/4 of the way through when all that kept dragging on and on. I was consumed by the start and continuation of the war - again, some descriptions of WWII in Russia that were really compellingly written - but I was simply bored when things started looking "up" (at least in Simons' mind) for the characters. I wasn't interested in seeing how their relationship continued.

Characters in this novel are too simplistic, too immature - more like some kind of fan fiction than an edited, published novel. They are totally innocent, totally good, or totally evil. As others mentioned, descriptions can be tediously repetitive (food, kilometers, other details). I found myself telling family members about what I was reading, and realizing that I simply didn't care about or feel connection to any of the characters. For me, that is where I drop a novel, especially if I am more than halfway through it and have given it hearty effort. This was definitely a disappointment.

Wonderfully descriptive

I have had a really hard time deciding how to rate this book. I went into the book with incredibly high expectations. I just knew that I would fall in love with this book largely because I had been told that I would love it. I didn't love it. I liked it though and there were parts of it that I liked a whole lot. There were some sections of the book that didn't work for me nearly as well. I did enjoy reading this book overall despite my issues.

This book is set in Russia during World War II which is a really interesting period of time to read about. I did really enjoy the setting and the descriptions relating to the war. That was really the best parts of the book for me. The parts of the book set in Leningrad that deal with the hunger and desperation of the characters was incredibly done. This book would have easily been a 5 star read for me if the whole book had that same level of impact. I also really liked the last section of the book that was more war focused.

There were other sections of the book that didn't work for me nearly as well. Tatiana seems really immature during the first section of the book and kind of drove me nuts. She is young at the start of the story and it really showed. I also had some issues concerning Alexander's relationship with Tatiana's sister, Dasha. Alexander is actually Dasha's boyfriend during much of the book so Alexander and Tatiana keep their feelings for each other a secret. I didn't care for this aspect of the story at all.

This was a book that I think may have been a bit too long. I found myself growing tired of some parts of the book. The third section of the book that really focuses on the romance between Alexander and Tatiana was nice but it went on for too long in my opinion. During that part of the book, they were so removed from the war that it really changed the impact of the story. I think that the first section of the book could have been cut back as well.

I would recommend this book to fans of historical romance. There were parts of this book that were really strong and I did enjoy it. I do plan to continue with the trilogy soon to see what else happens.

THE most valuable veterinary textbook I have ever owned.

Completely replaced class notes and has been useful and grade-saving in ALL my term 3 and 4 courses and beyond. Invaluable, helps with pathogenesis and DDx as well, plus excellent flow charts, diagrams, pictures. Many other books recommended by professors, upper termers, clinicians, they are no where near as helpful, this was a hidden gem, wish I had found it sooner than 1/2 way through my clinical pathology course.

good as book not so much for kindle

As a book held in our hand it is a great book. For some reason, as a kindle book they decided it didn't need page numbers, which has made it useless for me in classes. When the instructor asked us to turn to a page number all I had was location 16, 549 seriously? How does that help? This has made me so much more aware to look for this little things called page numbers, especially in text books.

Helpful text but has MANY spelling errors and few informational errors

I like all the cases in this text, helpful to go through. But there are TONS of spelling errors I have found, and I've only read 10 cases so far. There is even an error where they wrote "increased" instead of "decreased". Errors like that are no good, giving false information to student reading the text!

About the Author
Erica Wisner is a skilled educator and project coordinator, with over 25 years' experience building teamwork and facilitating hands-on learning. She loves making things from scratch - anything from blueberry scones to the oven they were baked in. Erica is the author of The Ultimate Girls' Guide to Science and The Art of Fire and she has also created instructional materials and rocket mass heater resources for the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, The City Repair Project, Handprint Press and others. Together with her husband Ernie, she has built over 700 super-efficient, clean-burning masonry stoves and led over 50 workshops across North America.

Ernie Wisner is a jack of all trades – his rich and varied background includes fishing and maritime work, firefighting, botany, natural building, hydraulics, and plumbing maintenance. Extreme conditions and high-risk work focused Ernie's attention on survival skills and emergency preparedness.
After witnessing hard evidence of global climate change, Ernie's search for sustainable solutions led him to Cob Cottage Company, where he built his first rocket mass heaters while serving on the research team for Ianto Evans and Leslie Jackson’s pioneering Rocket Mass Heaters. so you want

the current state of the art, in one convenient volume. Erica and Ernie are also accessible via the Permies.com forums for lots of follow-up support and brainstorming. With grit and by grace, rocket mass heaters will begin to replace other heaters wherever appropriate, which will drastically increase comfort and decrease pollution and fuel use.

People are already designing combo rocket (mass) heater/cookers (including grilling and smoking), which should render charcoal obsolete wherever trees grow and stick fuel is available.

This book also clearly describes how the heater is not appropriate for my current living situation...so I will have to wait until I move (since I'm not going to undertake a major remodel -- I have wood floors and a basement). If I was going to stay here forever, I'd solarize my south with an attached greenhouse and rocket thermal mass bench. Having a clear understanding of design parameters helps unleash the systems-level design creativity!

If you are looking for answers to all sorts of questions about building a Rocket Mass Heater, this is the book that you need to have on your bookshelf next to "Rocket Mass Heaters" by Evans / Jackson.
I love that Ernie and Erica also use drawings which make explanations very clear.

This book will diminish the need of endless surfing and exploring the internet. Thank you!

Great for self-sufficency

This book and their DVD is very helpful in building and designing a rocket mass heater. As I venture into self-sufficency, it makes sense to have a rocket mass heater in one's home should we lose electrical power or should something happen to the electrical grid. It makes me feel safe to know that I can do many things to protect myself and my family by learning from others. I love their pioneering spirits and the willingness to share it with us.

About the Author

John Douillard is the author of The 3-Season Diet and Body, Mind, and Sport, which has sold over 60,000 copies and has been printed in six languages. His book Perfect Health for Kids, was released early in 2004, followed by The Encyclopedia of Ayurvedic Massage (both 2004, North Atlantic Books). John received his Ayurvedic training in India and holds a Ph.D. in Ayurvedic medicine from the Open International University. He is the former Director of Player Development for the New Jersey Nets in the NBA. He co-directed Deepak Chopra's Ayurvedic center for eight years and has trained over 2000 Western doctors in Ayurvedic medicine. He launched a preservative-free Ayurvedic skin care line in 1998, and an Ayurvedic herbal line for health professionals in 2003. He has been teaching Ayurvedic medicine, natural health, fitness, and nutrition internationally for seventeen years. Currently he directs the LifeSpa School of Ayurveda and practices Ayurvedic and chiropractic medicine at LifeSpa in Boulder, Colorado, where he lives with his wife and six children.

Excellent! Learned a lot about how health "really" works...

I learned a LOT about how disease and being unhealthy happens from this book...now when anything unhealthy happens to someone in my family it no longer seems "so random"... I can usually immediately see where it may have come from.

One big ah-ha was that I learned how our digestive system is at the center of most health issues - it's the place where we absorb "good stuff" and eliminate "bad stuff" - so if this isn't working right, ALL kinds of problems can be created in the body - due to "not enough good stuff being absorbed" or having to store "bad stuff" in various parts of the body that were not really meant for storage...So the better care you can take of your digestive system the better overall health you will have.

I've applied many of his specific home remedies to myself and family, and it's been incredibly useful. We cleared up my niece's constipation issues with this herbal mix called Triphala. My son and I haven't had a cold ALL winter long (it's March now) and I credit turmeric + raw honey for that as well as by "eating seasonally." Basically all of the things he's recommended have actually worked for me when I've tried them. I even cleared up a skin rash I had last summer by using the knowledge I gained from this book. I tell EVERYONE, especially parents, about this book, it's been so useful - and I love that it's natural health remedies geared towards children specifically. So often you wonder "would this be OK to give to my 3 year old?" so it's nice that he's coming from that perspective.

The only downside of this book is that I felt it could have been organized a little better - eg- have cleaner "call out boxes" for home remedies instead of having them interspersed with text/prose at times. I've found it somewhat hard to quickly look things up... But it's not horrible either - just could be better. That's the only reason I give him 4 stars instead of 5.

I learned so much from this book! I already had a pretty good knowledge of Ayurveda, but the way Dr. Doulliard weaves the latest research with the ancient wisdom and makes it all practical for modern families makes this a must read for everyone!
